Much more hair falls out when hair grows longer...

Over the last couple years, I have kept my hair grown out (only 1-2 inches long) for about 4 months or so and then buzz it down to 1/4 inch for the next 4 months; I switch back and forth. The thing I've noticed is that when it first starts growing back out after the final buzz, it looks pretty good, but by the time the next 4 months is up, it looks terrible because more and more hairs fall out as it gets longer. I know hairfall becomes more noticeable when the hair is longer, but this is way past that. So then I buzz it again. Then while I keep it buzzed for the next 4 months, a lot of the hair grows back so then it looks pretty good when I want to grow it out; the cycle continues, hehe. I prefer to keep my hair longer, so does anybody have any advice on combating this (or why this happens)? Right now my hair is about 1.5 inches long and I have noticed more and more hair loss each day. I do Nizoral twice a week, followed by tea tree condition those days as well. I've also been on Propecia (1/4 pill per day because of side effects) and Rogaine liquid twice a day for about 5 months. I've seen good results, but I don't know if that is just because I had left my hair buzzed for about 4 months again. Any help would be appreciated.

When hair is longer, hair that falls is much more visible. It may be just that. When it is short, it may fall in the same quantity, but you almost don't see it.(when it is long, it clogs to your fingers when you wash)

And, cosmetically speaking, what you say is normal. When hair is very short, it hides very well the fact that it is thin. You almost cannot make a big difference between a person with rare hair and a person with very thick hair when they both are buzzed. As it keeps growing, the thinnes becomes much and much obvious.

I don't know other explanations. Maybe when hair is long, it's much easier to lose hair due to simply pulling it out when you wash it , for example, or even when you sleep.
Or it may be a problem of synchronization of hair cycles. As you know, it is natural to lose 100 hairs a day, then they grow again after some time. It may be that, for you, hair cycles are messed up, and in a period you loose more hair, so it looks bad, then in other period, you lose fewer hairs, and grow back the others, and it looks good again.
But i think keeping it short is the better choice. Easier maintenace. And the worst looking hair is long and thin hair! Long and thin hair is definitely worse than no hair at all!
I used to keep the hair long, to hide that it is thin, and i was expecting that longer hair will cover up better the thinnes. I almost had an obsession for the scalp to not show at all, not even 1 mm.
So i was constantly waiting for it to get longer and longer, but guess what: the longer it became, the worst it looked, making me frustrated! I buzzed it and surprisingly it looked very well.
And another aspect: as hair keeps growing and you don't cut it, the hairs begin to deteriorate, especially at the ends, so it looks messy and bad, and at a certain point you simply cannot style it any more.
