minoxidil and dependent hair

i started to notice i was thinning about 1 1/2 to 2 yrs ago and first opted for decent shampoo, root lotions and multivitamins...nothing happened. I then decided to try minoxidil on the thinning area to see if i could 'beef it up'. The minoxidil caused me to shed and the hair that grew was thin velous hair which to be honest made things worse not better. i foolishly stopped and the thinning patch has never got any thicker.

my question is that if minoxidil grows hair (which i am certain it does), are the follicles dependent on minoxidil for the rest of there lifespan? i am thinking that if i never applied minoxidil in the first place i maybe slightly better off...certainly no worse.

but if i am on propecia now (into my 7 month) then should this grow back some of the hair i lost by using the minoxidil...

there is no male pattern baldness in my family really so this vexes my somewhat.
