Hiya

I just popped in here from the girls forum BECUASE I seriously need to ask you guys a question re Proscar. I have been diagnosed with FPB ... Wooohoooo.. and I live in England,.... my Endo prescribed me 5mg Proscar tablets once a day (I have no idea why I have to take five and you guys seem to take 1mg), however to get the tablets has been a nightmare as no chemist is willing to give it to me because I am a woman.

Managed to get it eventually by taking letter from endo and demanding it. I have been taking it for six (ish) weeks as has my twin sister and I am noticing that I am getting burning pain on the top of my scalp ALONG with a load of hairs coming out .. its totally freaking me out ... I have extensions in at the moment to thicken up my hair and now its likley they are going to start dropping out

Guys is this NORMAL i read that you all speak of sheds but I run my hands thruogh the back of my hair just now and I counted 50 hairs and I was not even rough... anyone else have this burning pain ????

Please help me ... not many women have tried this and I have only heard one story where the girl lost ALL her hair through the shed .. whther that is true I dont know.

Would REALLY REALLY REALLY appreciate any advice from the PROS on Propecia!

Sal

if you are post menopause, or for some reason can't have children then i could see maybe getting propecia, otherwise, WHAT???? propecia is exclusively a drug for men. Be VERY careful, and i hope you are on contraceptives religiously!!!!! i would get a second opinion on that as well.

I must too say that I'm a bit concerned with that doctor of yours.

But when this is said, I don't read the statement "for men only" as women should NEVER take it. I read it, because there are pregnancy problems.

This is taken from the instructions:

"A warning about PROPECIA and pregnancy.

Women who are or may potentially be pregnant:
- must not use PROPECIA
- should not handle crushed or broken tablets of PROPECIA.
If a women who is pregnant with a male baby absorbs the active ingredient in PROPECIA, either by swallowing or through the skin, it may cause abnormalities of a male baby’s sex organs. If a woman who is pregnant comes into contact with the active ingredient in PROPECIA, a doctor should be consulted. PROPECIA tablets are coated and will prevent contact with the active ingredient during normal handling, provided that the tablets are not broken or crushed."

I mean, why say; "women who are or may potentially be pregnant" if it goes for women in general? I think it's okay for women to take the drug, then stop before getting pregnant. But this only my theory. See another doctor, but don't dismiss the idea totally. Although I would stop taking it for now until you know for sure. And at least cut the pills in fours. That dosage is insane.

I would assume women taking procepcia is ok IF you are not going to have a baby OR you are going to have a baby girl.

Hi,

I don't know much about Finasteride use by Women, but I do know they're not supposed to touch the crushed tablets for fear of birth defects.

Please see our "sister" site, http://www.heralopecia.com, for more info. The ladies there are friendly and should be more knowledgable about this subject.

Hope that helps.

not true. The amount of finasteride in semen is so low that it will not have any effect on the foetus. It is said that it takes buckets of semen to cause a birth defect.

More importantly, by the time the *male* fetus has begun to develop sexual organs, the finasteride is long long long gone...

Birth defects were found only in male fetus of Monkeys that were injected with 500 times the regular dose of finasteride. It was a liquid injection directly into the uterus. The birth defect was the incomplete formation of the urethra. During genital development the urethra forms last and "sews itself together" on the underside. The monkey had an unclosed underside of the shaft.

Girls on Propecia/Proscar

Finasteride was originally for male prostate problems and females do NOT have a prostate therfore DO NOT TAKE FINASTERIDE until you have checked it out with a number of doctors! :x

Get a second opinion fast

Go to another doctor, explain the situation. My girlfriend who is a chemist thinks your doctor must be crazy.

Also, PLEASE make sure that you are not pregnant.

You might try cortizone shots in your scalp. This helps many women with FPB.
