Medication To Bridge Time Until Transplant - Possible?

Hello,

After long time of reading silently, finally my first post here, I really hope you guys can help me out here!
I am currently 20 years old, experiencing strongly accelerating hair loss. Won't bore you with details - just saying that without action - I will likely go completely bald by my early thirties.

So right now, after consulting with 2 different specialists, I am strongly thinking about starting to take hair loss prevention medication (Minoxidil and/or Propecia). The only thing that is basically keeping me from starting is the fact that I definitely do not want to continue taking them for the next 30-40 years. Instead I would like to bridge the coming 5-10 years until being able to get a transplant - and then stop taking any medications.

However, if I would start taking one or both of these medications now at age 20, would that in any way hinder getting successful transplants in 5-10 years? As far as I know, these hair loss prevention medications are also typically prescribed after a hair transplant to stop further loss, wouldn't that be an issue?
  • Furthermore, wouldn't taking Minoxidil for years prior to the transplant reduce its effectiveness to the point of increasing the risk of an initial stress loss from a transplant, and more importantly reduce long-term effectiveness of the transplant?
  • As well, wouldn't I have to stop medication many months prior to a transplant - for the real extent of hair loss to become clear?

So basically, is it even feasible to plan using the medication the next years and then getting a transplant as a more permanent solution? I would just be happy with keeping some hair on my head for the next 30,40 years - really doesn't have to be perfectly juvenile hairline.

PS: I guess that due to not taking any medication after the transplant, I would likely need several transplants for areas that would recede after the point of the transplant?

Thank you very much already - every advice is very welcome!

PUSH - I'd consider the question relatively easy to answer for all these long-term members here?

The simple question is basically asking (as for a lack of proper online sources found myself) if hair transplants around age 30 require medication as supplementary treatment to maintain other hair not lost yet or to strengthen the transplanted hairs themselves.

Thanks again guys!
