male pattern baldness Or Telogen Effluvium? Should I Seek Treatment?

So recently Ive been experiencing a drastic increase in hair shedding. The hairs that shed range from short and wispy to thick and long as the rest of my hair. I initially thought it was telogen effluvium as have had stressful past few months which included death of family and general anaesthesia. Ive also been prescribed a beta blocker for anxiety and apparently this is a major culprit in Telogen Effluvium

My hair is currently quite long and my fringe tends to block my temples but noticed that theyve started to recede quite badly. There are wispy vellus hairs in the areas where theres recession. Im quite worried that its male pattern baldness and that its going to progress although theres no history of baldness either side of the family but my father however does have a U shaped hairline without baldness.

Everywhere I've read states that the earlier treatment is started, the better. As I'm only 20 years old I don't want to be taking medication/minoxidil for as long as I want to keep my hair but equally dont want to be bald at a young age. Is it worth seeking treatment (ie finasteride or minoxidil)? How bad does the recession seem? Is it possible to regrow the vellus hairs at the temple to much thicker terminal hairs?

Telogen Effluvium does not cause hair to recede or miniaturize, you will basically have hair loss all over. Your hair loss may stabilize to a hair line like your fathers, you will have to wait it out and see. Minoxidil will cause you to recover some ground but its effects do start to wear off after a couple of years. I personally would not suggest finasteride right now, others will disagree.
