Hi guys new member here,

I'm 31 years old with no history of male pattern baldness in my life up until this point. My grand father and uncle on my mothers side have both had male pattern baldness, I cannot speak for my father's side as I've never met him. I have always had fine hair, but plenty of it until recently. It started around 6 months ago with a comment from someone that I'm going bald on top. I thought nothing of it and carried on as normal. Then again someone else said the same thing around a month ago. This prompted me to go to a hair loss specialist clinic for a free consultation. They took pictures and for the first time in a long time I saw my crown for what it has become and I was shocked.

I have definitely thinned on top but its able to be masked by the fact I have medium length hair and the crown is still covered quite a bit by it. It shows up the most under bright lights. From what I can tell I have minimal recession in the hairline. My hair loss has become my new obsession and I've been obsessively observing any and all shedding, each morning I've been checking my pillow but noticing only one or two hairs at the most, sometimes none at all. Again, minimal if any hair loss when showering, and blow drying. So I'm confused, I thought I'd be losing a lot more hair than I am if I am in fact suffering from male pattern baldness. So could this be something else?

In a knee jerk reaction I began taking Saw Palmetto / Pumpkin Seed suppliments last week and began using Nizoral 2 percent. Unconvinced about SP and Nizoral, today I went to the doctor and told him of my problem with the thinning crown. He knew less about hair loss treatments than I did which wasn't encouraging, however I walked away with a prescription for Finasteride 1mg. After reading the horror stories online, like most I am incredibly apprehensive to take finasteride. Although I'm open minded enough to know that for every horror story published there are probably 10 success stories which haven't been published. Still the side effects concern me and I'm wondering if I'm even bad enough to warrant taking finasteride.

As I've only been thinning for a short while I've been wondering if it's because my diet or intense weightlifting sessions I do. I eat the same things most days, typical body building diet (salmon, fillet steak, chicken, spinach, brown rice, broccoli, eggs, rolled oats, protein shakes etc). I take absolutely NO steroids or testosterone boosters though. I lift heavy and do a lot of compound exercises like deadlifts, bench, squats etc all of which I know now increase testosterone and potentially DHT. I was supplementing creatine which I've recently found out increases DHT too, needless to say my creatine has now gone into the rubbish bin!

I, like all of you, cannot bear to lose my hair. I take great pride in it and it makes me feel good when styled. Any thoughts or comments on my situation would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like your hairline is still OK. Crown is thinner.
Try minoxidil first and finasteride after. Or together. If you have sides, stop.

Are you under a lot of stress? Do you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables?

I would ditch the protein shakes if they are whey, which I am assuming they are.

Thanks for the replies guys. I still can't figure out why I'm not shedding despite this thin patch on my crown.

I am under stress quite often but not all the time. My work can be stressful (full time firefighter / EMT). I do eat quite a lot of fruit and vegetables too, each day I'll have atleast two bananas, spinach, kale and an apple. Is there something I should be concerned about with whey protein and hair loss?
