Maintaining Hair!

I'm 20 years old and am experiencing hair loss. I've recently purchased Minoxidil 5% liquid and Nizoral 2%. I just have a few questions:

1) My goal is to maintain the hair I have right now for as long as possible. To maintain my hair for long-term, would it be better for me to use Minoxidil 1x a day or 2x? Does Minoxidil lose it's effectiveness faster if you are using it 2x a day versus 1x?

2) Which parts of my head should I apply Minoxidil? Should I apply it everywhere on the top of my head or just on the effected areas?

3) Let's say I use Minoxidil and after a few years it stops working, will the hair I gained or maintained be lost slowly or quickly?

If anyone can answer any of the above-mentioned questions, I would really appreciate it. Sorry if any of the questions sound dumb.

Will the hair that minoxidil maintained be lost in a short period of time or an extended period of time when Minoxidil stops working?

I really don't want to add finasteride to my regime, the symptoms worry me. I want to see where Minoxidil takes me.

I heard that Minoxidil is good for maintaining the hair you have and that's what I want. I wouldn't mind some regrowth, but that's just icing on the cake.

Is finasteride better than Minoxidil at maintaining hair?

Any other opinions would be appreciated!

hair gained from minoxidil will be lost within a few months if it is stopped.

minoxidil is not good for maintaining, it is a growth stimulant and does not tackle the main cause of hairloss so you will not maintain on it. Maintaining is what finasteride does.

Without a strong DHT blocker you will be on a losing battle.

Symptons of finasteride are blown out of proportion. some will get sides, the majoirty will not.

I'm little confused about the bolded point. When you say 'if it is stopped', are you trying to say when minoxidil stops working or when i stop using it? Sorry about the confusion.

I'll do more research on finasteride, I'm just worried about Post-Finasteride Syndrome. Not sure I want to risk permanent damage. Plus, I don't want symptoms at a relatively young age (20).

Minoxidil probably doesn't stop working. Some people have said it does, but I think they're confused because of the way a certain study was conducted.

If you stop using minoxidil you will continue to lose those hairs that were dependent upon minoxidil.

Im 24 and have been on finasteride since 19 with no sides, but everyone is different so its best to research into it.

Absolutely no side effects?

Also, I wanted to know if it's normal to have a hairline that is noticeably thinning more on side? Should I do anything about it?

The best available scientific evidence shows that you will continue to lose hair, WHETHER OR NOT YOU USE MINOXIDIL. All minoxidil does is buy you a little time! It doesn't interfere with the fundamental balding process.
