little bulb type things on the end of hair

Hi all,

I have noticed from time to time I will itch my head and when I do it feels like i have a spot there but when I go to scratch it out I find it is a strand of hair with a little bulb type thing on the end (sometimes they are white and sometimes red/yellow, what the hell are these little things?
Are they a dead hair follicle so i will never hair hair there again?

The little bulb is the root. How hard are you scratching??

not hard, just lke if you can imagine scratchin the head off a spot.

Why would the roots be coming out? Is this bad news?
