Right, I'm sure you've all seen this by now, because I've seen it posted in various places at least 5 times by now.

Watch it from beginning to end and witness this man's path from NW3 (probably? I'm no good with Norwood ratings) to NW1 and pay attention to the TIMELINE!

At the beginning of 2010 he still had no regrowth and was at his worst. Then, look as far as the 2010 pictures go. By January 2011 he has already regrown EVERYTHING. Back at NW1.
That is at most 12 months of treatment and to regrow that much. Very few people achieve anything similar with finasteride.

Look at what he used:
-2010 Estradiol valerate depot (inter brands), Hydroxyprogesterone caproate depot (inter brands) [Win]
-2010 Birth control pills (inter brands) [Win]

Freaking birth control pills. So I went and looked up exactly what birth control pills contain. Here's a good list:
http://www.stlzoo.org/files/7513/3587/6531/bcpill_revised.pdf

There is a form of estrogen and a synthetic progestin in most of them. The estrogen is ethinyl estradiol.
He took them orally.

I'd like to talk about a few things, if some more scientifically minded people would care to discuss:
1. By what mechanism could oral estradiol (and perhaps the progestins as well) combat Androgenetic Alopecia and regrow hair so efficiently? I assume it is some form of androgen antagonism but I'd like to get into more detailed mechanisms which leads me to my next point...
2. Would the active ingredients of the pill, if applied topically working only on the hair follicle (without their systemic effect) still have the potential for such results? And lastly...
3. I'd like to nudge forward some brainstorming about a topical estrogen formulation that would not go systemic. Now I am no chemist but I do like to research things so... if someone more informed would care to start off with some ideas then I can throw some in later.

I assume the progestins do not do much but rather the estradiol is the main thing that helps here. As progesterone (the natural one) has been trialed for hair loss topically (and some orally as well) with limited results. But maybe the synthetic ones have different properties.

In any case. 5-AR inhibitors offer mostly maintenance. This thing seems to regrow very well - I'd like to find out why that is and how we can go about appropriating it, minus any side effects.

Thanks
