I've noticed I occasionally shed thin, kinked hairs. It almost looks like they've been fried. This worried me a bit because I thought they were only coming from my crown but I'm realizing most of them are coming from the far back and sides (places not effected by male pattern baldness.) I shower with very warm water, so I'm thinking it may just be damaged hair. I'm a little concerned though because I read that kinked hairs are a sign that they've been effected by DHT. I've been finding hairs like this my whole life, though more recently in the past few years, so I'm not sure what to make of it.
My dad's hairline started receding when he was 14, reached around a NW2.5 when he was 17 then stopped for a while. He developed a bald patch in his early 30's then thinned out pretty bad. By the time he was 43 he lost pretty much everything on top, although the sides never dropped.
My maternal grandfather's hairline receded to a mature hairline in his late teens, then stayed that way all his life. He died with probably the thickest head of hair I have ever seen on someone his age. This holds true for all men on that side of the famiy.
Aside from these kinked hairs all the other hairs I shed are very thick all the way through. I'm 18, have a straight hairline and no signs of hairloss at all. I'm actually teased for how thick my hair is. These little kinked hairs I find drive me crazy though.
Before he started losing it, my dad had very, very, VERY thin, straight, black hair. My maternal grandfather had extremely thick, black, wavey hair. My hair is exactly like my mom and maternal grandfather's hair in thickness, texture, color and every other imaginable way.
Are these kinked hairs anything to worry about? I'm not noticing any thinning but I can't help but be concerned.
EDIT: I just ran my fingers through the back of my hair (area not effected by male pattern baldness) and got a hair that was thick towards the root, then got kinky and thin at the end. Maybe these really are just damaged hairs, but that doesn't really explain the few that are thick all the way through, except for a kinked root.
I also have a pimple on my scalp towards the side. It's not near my hairline or crown, it's in an area on the side that isn't normally effected by hairloss. I heard this could be caused by an abundance of DHT in the scalp. I never had anything like this before yesterday, although my girlfriend said it's normal and she's had them before. This doesn't help my anxiety at all. :/
I first noticed it last night, it's very small and hard to find now. It's almost gone.
