Hello,

I am surprised I found this forum and I hope to get some advice over the course of the issue that I am having.

I am a 24 1/2 year old male. Last night I spotted an area on the top/back of my head around the whirl where the hair is thinning. I can see the scalp a bit through the hair here. Around that area is a bit sore whenever I run my hand and move around the hair and it has been that way for years. I have only noticed the thinning hair about a year or so ago though.

I am honestly getting very depressed and self conscious about this. I immediately made a doctors appointment for tomorrow afternoon.

Do any of you have recommendations for what I should be doing at this point and what I should discuss with my internist? I have heard that there i rogaine, but that can make even more hair fall out. I heard there is propecia, but at my age, it can kill my hormones, sex drive, etc. Should I let this take its course or consider transplants? I am honestly so lost.

Some background:

My dad is 56 and has good hair. On my mothers side, my grandfather and all of my uncles are extremely bald. Their balding left 0% of hair on the top of their heads. I may be able to count any hairs on their head, which scares me. Their balding style still left good hair around their temples and backs, but the tops of their head were fully bald.

Thank you all in advance for any advice or personal experience of how I may prevent this or ways that would benefit me without severe problems down the road.

Try to relax until your hair concern(s) is properly diagnosed. It is always disheartening to learn you are losing your hair still I've got to remind you that you are already taking the necessary steps in order to most effectively address your concern. Continue your own research and ALWAYS put your health first. Thanx for sharing.

1. Most male-pattern-baldness comes from the X chromosome, so your mother's father being slick bald is what you should expect.
2. Get something topical like basic minoxidil or a more advanced formula of herbs/stimulants/minoxidil such as lipogaine, or tribooster.
3. Oral intake whether propecia, saw palmetto or anything that inhibits DHT. (The best way to do this is to get a blood test to see where your DHT level is.
If the numbers are high, then lowering DHT should be effective, if the DHT is already low to midrange, then your follicles are more sensitive to DHT,
meaning if you inhibit too much, you will experience lowered sex drive/spermatogenesis.
4. Nizoral anti-dandruff hair shampoo/treatment, I don't know too much about it but there are claims it removes some DHT from the scalp. Use sparingly 1-3 times a week.
5. Shave head if you want, sometimes it looks better ;)

Thanks so much guys. Hopefully I can stop it before it continues too much. I'll definitely discuss the blood tests and treatments with my doctor tomorrow.

you will be fine on finasteride/propecia 1mg or 1.25mg a day the horror stories are exaggerated and rare. Most people don't have any side effects at all and their hair loss comes to a stop for years. There is an initial shed with these treatments that can last up to a few months as you mentioned but it all grows back. If finasteride gives you sides you can always drop it as the sides are temporary and you can use rogaine as something to fall back on if finasteride doesn't work out for you and gives you sides. I would try to get a prescription for finasteride from your doctor. It seems like you are making it out to be worse than it actually is. "Seeing the scalp abit through the whirl" probably no one notices
