I'm on 1/4 proscar for over a year now. I started using minoxidil about 5 months back and it was fine. However a few weeks ago I started to get really itchy on my head. I had a semi rash along my arm and along my forehead as well, though that went away.

I noticed the tops of my ears getting really dry and flaky as well. It would start burning when I put on minoxidil so I stopped it about a week back. I think it was helping so I want to get back on, but I don't know what's going on with my scalp. It has some red splotches here and there with itchiness and my ears are still dry????

I cut back on nizoral as well, since I read someone on here that too much use can be bad too.

Any ideas on how to proceed? I really want to be able to use minoxidil w/o the burning.

Do you, like many people, sleep with your arm across your forehead, you may have transfered some minoxidil/PPG to your arm ?

Folligen helps

Nizoral Helps (I have used Nizoral everyday for over a year now, may hair feels fine)

T/Gel helps

T/Sal helps

If you are still getting scalp irritaion consider using Dr Lees Minoxidil, it contains less PPG than standard minoxidil, it is the PPG that causes the irritation not the, relatively innocuous. minoxidil.

The product to look out for is 'Product Number 500 standard minoxidil'

He also does a PPG free version, but this is a slow drying formula (similar to Rogaine). Product 500 is fast drying.

I never thought of the arm across the head thing. I do that, with the very arm that had the rash so I think you're right. I'm using Dr. Lee's 500 right now actually, and I'm still getting irritation. I use nizoral about 2 times a week, I read that using it too much may be bad. Would using TGEL be redundant?

Maybe I'll try the other Dr. Lee's formula, any other things I could do?

T/Gel and T/Sal will most probably help.

I had irritation, itching and red spots for the first few months of Minoxidil/Propecia, it drove me mad sometimes, especially at the front, but after continued and consitent use of T/Gel and Nizoral my scalp is 100% itch free, absolutely nothing, so time may help you too.

With Nizoral (ketoconazole) there is the theoretical risk that overuse may kill off the natural flora in your scalp, I have not had this problem and I use Nizoral every day, different scalps will react differently.

Prehaps consider giving your scalp a day off each week as it gets used to its new enviroment (alcohol/PPG/minoxidil), I did this during my itchy period and used moisturiser on my scalp for this one day a week, I believe this helped.

Thx, I will try some TGEL. I'll hold off on too much more Nizoral until I read more about the possible dangers? When you get a chance you can you elaborate on the natural flora in the scalp?
