Hey all,

Been on finasteride for almost three years. But just recently I've noticed that whenever I'm in a period that I'm not shedding, I get a severe itch across my scalp. I'm associating the itch with finasteride because immediately after I take it in the morning, the itching begins and by night the itch has subsided substantially. Is this itch from male pattern baldness or finasteride?

Anyone else have a similar experience?

Hm. You could try Nizoral to see if that helps with the itching. It may not be related, psychosomatic, or some other problem.

I can't think of any reason why finasteride itself would cause scalp itch. In my opinion, male pattern baldness definitely causes scalp itch, and so in theory, finasteride should actually reduce the itchiness. I'm taking dutasteride and I've definitely noticed my scalp itches much less than before I started treatment. I'd also go along with the suggestion made by Virginityrocks (nice username by the way :)) that you try Nizoral shampoo, but just make sure you only use it about twice a week. Overuse can make scalp itchiness even worse. It may be that you have a dry scalp, in which case I would suggest you try "Vaseline hair tonic and scalp conditioner". You can find it on Amazon and it is amazing for dry scalps.

I've been using nizoral 1% every other day for about a year. Perhaps is it the strength of finasteride wearing off? Doesn't the effect of finasteride begin to decrease after 2 years? The effect of male pattern baldness is stronger than the finasteride and nizoral?
