Is Rogaine really working?

Hey there guys,

I'm currently on a Rogaine treatment for like 4 months now. The only thing so far I've seen from it is more shedding.
I read that was normal so I just went with it. I've been using it since august but since november my hair is shedding a lot!
Started it like 3 weeks after my 2nd transplant (3500 grafts) and both of them aren't showing real results to me.
I noticed my hair at the back is getting wayyyy thinner then it was at the start of this year?
Also using that Keto shampoo from Revita. Read it was alright!

Any tips?

Stick with it Hajo. Minoxidil ate my hairline before I started seeing results. I don't think it brings you back to baseline, but doing nothing is not an alternative when you're 100% positive you're losing hair. You would lose it anyways over time.

Will do, I'm just worried. I can hide it with Toppik. But I see my hair thinning on the sides (middle, left and right) thinning out. So far I haven't seen much Results.
The Doctor that did my hair transplant said that I should use it. But reading too much negative stories gets your kinda scared you know :)

Rogaine definitely helps, but not as much as Finasteride. My doctor (Dr. Bernstein from Bernstein Medical) told me that Rogaine is responsible for 20% of treatment, and Finasteride is 80%.

What I do is I use Rogaine solution instead of the foam at night, which is more easily spread and absorbed better by the scalp. Unfortunately, this isn't an option for some people as it contains a form of alcohol that irritates some scalps (not mine). Another problem with the solution is it makes the hair greasy and weird, and takes pretty much a full night to dry, so this isn't something you can put on and go out 10 minutes later.

In the morning, I use the foam, because it dries very quickly and actually helps me style my hair. Remember, both Rogaine and Finasteride work extremely slowly, you have to have patience and be able to use them for an extremely long time. Some people see results in 2-4 months, others wait as much as a year to see them. It depends on many factors. Good luck!

Thanks for the kind words! Not sure about starting finasteride again...
Because I had sides in the past and I usually react pretty heavy to those kinds of medicine. :/

Like to hear more from you guys!

I don't know why he told you this because hair loss treatments really don't work like that. It's not a fixed percentage of help for each one and Minoxidil and Finasteride certainly doesn't help treat everyone. Minoxidil is a growth stimulant that in about 1/2-2/3rds of people gives some degree of regrowth. Finasteride addresses the route cause of hair loss by inhibiting DHT, the hormone which directly/indirectly causes hair to miniaturize and eventually stop growing completely. If you are on just minoxidil the chances are you will not be maintaining your hair.

Hajo1992, assuming you are, like most of this forum, balding under 30 then the balding is almost certainly too aggressive to be stopped with just minoxidil alone. You will probably need an AA, be it Finasteride, Dutasteride or RU. If you have had sides in the past with finasteride then it might be worth trying RU which is a topical solution that inhibits DHT in the scalp. It can however, go systemic just like Finasteride. Unfortunately these are the only options really available to you for the moment. There are some very exciting treatments in the pipeline, If you want to see some of them user Hellouser recently went to the 2015 World Hair Congress and has posted a lot of threads under that section. You can find it from the Forum page.

As for if Rogaine is working for you, it is difficult to say, by the 4 month mark most people have at least seen a sign of regrowth, Minoxidil has been known to cause hair loss without the hair ever growing back while on the treatment. This is what happened to me, I took Kirkland Minoxidil for nearly 3 months before I got fed up of the state it had left my hair in, I had 0 signs of regrowth from it and lost a lot of density across my whole scalp in that time. Also near the end I realized minoxidil really isn't something I want to be on for the rest of my life, I didn't fancy applying it everyday and it can age skin horribly. It's up to you if you want to continue treatment of it, I think the general consensus is you should try it for 6 months before deciding whether to stop or not.

Can I ask why you got 2 Hair Transplants without being on an Anti Androgen? What surgeon did you go with? I would have thought they would at least advise you to be on an AA at the least. And maybe even have turned you away if you weren't on one.

Your finasteride side-effects are placebo I think, seeing as you take SP which inhibits type 1 and type 2 dht, hahahah

Saw Palmetto inhibits barely any of either though.

This is basically my opinion on it. I usually react pretty heavy to medicine anyway
Not saying it doesn't work, not saying it happens to everyone. But when I tried it I felt different. But just went with it and didn't think about it anymore
After 1 month I felt aggressive, sad and not attracted to my GF (at the time) anymore.
After 2 months I threatened a friend and became more introvert. The things that made me happy didn't make me happy anymore.
After that I thought it could be the propecia! So I decided to quit. Went throught counseling (not even joking here) because I felt depressed.
Then 2 months after we (me and my parents) saw me improve again and decided to go with a transplant.
During the time I lost some hair so now I went with a second one. So I'm going with Rogaine, maybe that RU stuff (?) need more info, Revita (keto shampoo) and SP
