Is it bad for your hair stylist to pull on your hair?

I always want to say something while getting my hair cut when she is pulling my hair straight to cut it. Can it damage the hair/follicle or cause it too loosen/fall out?

I read something about tellogen(sp?) phase hair falls out easier. Miniaturized aka balding hair is more often in this phase and thus easily falls out and will fall out. That doesnt mean its always in this phase. Hairs not in this phase are in fact very difficult and painful to pull out so I doubt a stylist is doing any damage unless they are literally pulling your hair out. But dont take my word for it thats just my guess.

Well then why do people on here and other forums say not to drive with the top down and avoid friction or pressure on hair?

Well its probably not a good thing, but I dont think its going to make a difference unless your pulling your hair all day everyday. Girls that wear tight ponytails everyday can have hair problems.

Nothing to do with exacerbating hair loss, just a really bad idea for us male pattern baldness'ers. You spend an age styling your hair to minimize the thinness, disguise a bald spot, etc. then jump (step) into your car and destroy all the hard work. I have enough trouble with the wind as it is, no need to give it a helping hand.

If your hair follicles are healthy, you can pull them all you want and they will grow back. If they are male pattern baldness proned, they might not recover as well and over time could die sooner. But if she is not pulling that hard, you should be fine. You have to pull hairs out, or twist a lot of them, to get the damage needed. Hard to say who is susceptible. I just know some people who pluck their eyebrows pluck all their lives, and others get permenantly thin eyebrows withing a year or so. So it does not seem to cause it in healthy people, but can speed up the inevitable. Or maybe those hairs were just in the resting phase, and you helped them out of the scalp. male pattern baldness people have a higher percentage of thier hairs in the resting phase. I think 30-40% instead of 15%.

Agreed. They are morons. But you can damage your hair if you rip it out often. Healthy hair will grow back, but male pattern baldness hair won't recover as well. Wind in your hair, or brushing it, can't do any of that. But male pattern baldness hair does have 30-40% of follicles in dormant stage, which means the shafts can fall out easier. Too much brushing can help them fall out sooner, so you have fewer shafts on your head, but that is not the same as causing hair loss. It is not permenant. You have to rip or twist your hair out to cause any permenant loss, and it takes many cycles, and only if you have male pattern baldness.
