is Biotin actually useful?

I've read good things online about Biotin helping to thicken existing hairs and also thickening vellus hairs.
Obviously it isn't proven like Minoxidil & Finasteride, but I was just wondering if anyone has had any success using it and whether or not I should start using it, after all it can't hurt right?

How much would be the ideal dosage in terms of mg per day?
Is there any brands that is recommended?

Thanks.

Biotin is a good supplement, but won't do anything for balding. I take 10,000 mcg daily, not for hair loss purposes however.

Your nails will become awesome. Your hair (non male pattern baldness areas) will grow longer.

Biotin can be found aplenty in many food sources, especially egg yolk, so deficiency of Biotin is actually rare. That being said, a blatant deficiency of Biotin can result in hair loss (http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/mic/vitamins/biotin). You should probably look up a list of Biotin-rich foods to see if you even need the supplement. As the other user mentioned, there are not many (if any) studies that show Biotin can be used to treat hair loss, but here is a list of what it does help on, according to scientific research (http://www.uofmhealth.org/health-library/hn-2809001).

So the poster above me is right, you'll have awesome nails.
