Iron Deficiency Diffuse Hair Loss

I am 25 and for the past several years I have suffered from extreme hair loss that has effected me all over my scalp. The loss is very diffuse and does not follow the normal pattern of male pattern baldness. I was diagnoses with alopecia areata and received shots/used Clobetasol off and on for the past few years. I never really believed that I had AA as my loss was just a weird pattern of severe thinning and not smooth patches of circle/oval shapes that is characteristic of AA. After a physical two months ago the doctor ordered a iron test which revealed the following:
TIBC :470
SERUM IRON: 45
% SATURATION: 10
all of the results were flagged as being very abnormal for an adult man. Could this have been going on for years? I have battled with some extreme diet habits off and on for years (sometimes very restrictive diet), been a frequent blood donor, and run often (can cause destruction of blood cells). I think doctors don't suspect iron deficiency or anemia in young men and often fail to test men for that as it is common among menstruating women. I've also suffered from lethargy and some serious spells of body fatigue further confirming my belief that I have been deficient in iron for years. Lastly I suffered from sores at both corners of my mouth (can't remember the medical term) that occurred last summer, another symptom of low iron. I have been supplementing with Feosol since the first time. I found out last week my iron has improved. My last test showed after two months of iron Supplements: TIBC:378
SERUM IRON: 83
% SATURATION: 22
has any other guys experienced an issue like this and did yu see an improvement? Also, for.those dealing with hairloss that is not following the traditional hereditary pattern it may be a good idea to request a check of your iron since most doctors never order this test on men and it is hard to see from a general CBC lab order.

Yes, this looks like the likely cause. I feel it.

Iron deficiency anaemia and thyroid problems are very common causes of diffuse hair loss.

I don't think your running has anything to do with it. May be a dietary issue or some underlying chronic disease itself causing anaemia.

Anaemia symptoms only happen beyond a certain point and will vary between people. It's a frustratingly dubious symptom generator.

I've got somewhat diffuse hair loss and ferritin was ordered for me. It came back normal. I've never had iron problems. I'm glad you've found the very likely cause of your hair loss though. It has undoubtedly given you peace of mind.
