Is Proscar as affective as Propecia? Currently i have been using Propecia for the past 4 months. I think i just got some stability with my hair loss. However the cost seems pricy (approx. $75/month).

Wondering if Proscar can give me similar results but at a lower cost? Can someone give me an idea how much they pay for it? Also, my doctor gave me the prescription to Propecia, can I just ask her to switch to Proscar?

Thanks.

It would be a wise decision to ask your doctor to prescribe you generic proscar at your local costco or walmart. You will be able to get 7-8 month supply of the same medication for around $40. Propecia is not covered under medical insurance because Androgenic Alopecia is considered to be cosmetic. Proscar is diagnosed for enlarged prostates so it is covered by medical insurance. Make sure you tell your doctor that you plan to cut the pills in fourths to recieve the correct dosage of finasteride. Some doctors believe it to be unethical to prescribe Proscar, but you will be able to find a doctor who will.

Make no mistake, Propecia has 1mg of finasteride and Proscar has 5mg of finasteride. You can use Proscar for economic reasons but you have to cut the pill in 4 (easier) or 5 pieces.
