Hi
Ima 20 year old guy. I'm very concerned with my hair-situation. My dad is bald and in the last year my temples have receeded quite a bit. I don't want to go bald as my dad. I was wondering if i could ask you guys for advice.
Propecia? Doi have to take it forever?
Hair transplant? Does it work forever or do i have to do it more than once?
Any other ways to preserve my current hair?
Thanks in advance

If propecia (finasteride) works for you, then yeah, you'll have to keep taking it until something better, more permanent comes along.

Even if you get a hair transplant, your MBP will continue on the other hairs that have not been transplanted. I was reading that some people get a hair transplant and they still have to take propecia and minoxodil to save/protect what hair they have.

You're pretty young, and if you decide to start taking some drugs to prevent male pattern baldness, then you should probably see a doctor at least in the beginning when you first start, in my opinion. Some people can experience some side effects (usually minor), related to taking finasteride. People with certain medical conditions shouldn't take the drug. Propecia is 1mg of finasteride and that's the approved dosage for hairloss. There's also a pill called Proscar, which is 5mg of finasteride and some people take that pill (or a generic like Fincar) instead. They cut it into fourths usually and take 1.25 mg daily. Some people might even cut it into fifths, though that seems cumbersome, and I just stick with fourths myself. Proscar is the same as Propecia, it's just 5mg compared to 1 mg. The 5mg dosage of Proscar is for people with enlarged prostates. The reason people take proscar or fincar (and cut it up) for hairloss instead of propecia, is because it works out to be much cheaper.

Finasteride is a prescription drug, so you do need a prescription, unless you decide to order online from one of the overseas pharmacies which sell generic versions of finasteride for much cheaper than the brand name. Certain overseas pharmacies don't require a prescription, though there is a minor risk of having the shipment seized by customs in rare cases, depending upon where you live. You could always see a doctor first to start with and then switch to the cheaper stuff later on if you plan to use it for many years.

You shouldn't just take my word for this stuff though. I started taking finasteride 7 months ago, and before I did, I did a ton of research myself, reading about everything related to male pattern baldness and the different options related to it and I decided which options were best for me. If you decide to do something about your hairloss, then you're in it for the long haul, so a bit of time spent researching the options yourself is well worth it.

And don't trust what any one person tells you on a forum (not even me, lol). There's a lot of varying opinions sometimes and sometimes you have to decide for yourself what's best. If I were you I'd read everything related to male pattern baldness and then you'll be able to make a decision yourself.
