I think Nizoral damages my hair...

In January I started using Nizoral 2% shampoo twice a week. I leave it in my hair for 5 minutes and them use a conditioner because it dries it up too much.

However, everytime after I apply it, I notice my scalp burns. I used to think it does this because of male pattern baldness, and kept using it. But now I think it's the Nizoral that's causing it.

Anyone else have similar experiences? I'm thinking of going with a cooling head and shoulders shampoo instead. I am on propecia do maybe Nizoral isn't necessary.

I also use Nizoral twice a week for the last 6 months but I haven't experienced any problems at all. It's hard to say for sure if it is indeed helping me due to taking a lot of other things lol! But i do feel it is as my hair has got better since using it. You should just try using it once a week or once every fortnight and see what happens if you feel its making things worse for you.

My thoughts are that Nizoral is useless. The problem is that a lot of the people who promote it in the hair industry do so because of studies that do not even relate to male pattern baldness. Most of the studies have been done on seborrhoeic dermatitis, which in itself will cause hair thinning, shedding and loss. The shampoos in the studies simply help people with this condition.

I switched from Nizoral to head and shoulders with no impact at all and my hair has continued to regrow with finasteride. Here's one particular study on seborrhoeic dermatitis:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18498517

Summary for this particular problem:
Decreasing shedding: Nizoral > head and shoulders
Increasing hair growth: Head and shoulders > nizoral
increasing hair diameter: Nizoral > Head and shoulders

At end point, hair density was unchanged, although hair shedding was decreased (KTZ: -17.3%, PTO: -16.5%, ZPT: -10.1%) and the anagen hair percentage was increased (KTZ: 4.9%, PTO: 7.9%, ZPT: 6.8%). The effect on the mean hair shaft diameter was contrasted between the three groups of volunteers (KTZ: 5.4%, PTO: 7.7%, ZPT: -2.2%).

Now keep in mind that this is unlikely to have any impact on male pattern baldness. It is merely another addition to your regimen that can't hurt, but in your case it can so I would probably switch to H&S.
