Here is a brief history:
I noticed I was thinning on my hairline about 4 years ago while I was in college. I went to see my MD and told him I wanted to start on Propecia. He did some blood tests to make sure I would have no adverse effects from taking it. Everything came back fine. Then he sent me to a Dermatologist. The dermatologist gave a prescription and I used it for 6 months, but then the price got to be too much for me to handle while in college so I stopped using it. My friends all said I was crazy for going on it in the first place because they didn’t believe that I was losing my hair so I didn’t really mind stopping it.
After graduating and getting a job I started again because I could tell my hairline was receding even if no one believed me, but this time I only stayed on it for 9 months. Again, the cost got to be too much. My hair was still thick but just receding, and I had read somewhere that Propecia doesn’t work for a receding hairline. When I stopped taking it though I went through a pretty big shed… The worst I had ever seen. Hairs left on my pillow at night; hair coming out when I would comb it. It was everywhere. So I shaved my head. My hair still didn’t look bad; it was just a receding hairline.
I haven’t done anything for two years, but I’ve noticed that my hair is feeling thin on the crown and top of my head. I checked it many times after I have showered and that’s the only way it is noticeable. Its been coming out slow. I generally only loose 5 – 10 hairs in the shower. Then only 3-5 when I comb my hair. I only lost 3 hairs last night on my pillow, and it’s been like this for a while. It’s a very slow process.
So I’ve been thinking of restarting Propecia. I was doing some research online and came across this site, which is wonderful by the way. I never knew about Proscar so I went to my MD and asked if he would put me on it. He said I was too young to pass for a prescription of Proscar so that nixed the idea of the insurance company paying for it.
Now I’ve been looking into generics online. I’ve done a lot of research on the discussion boards and here are three sites I have seen mentioned quite a bit. I broke down the pricing between all three to help me make a decision.
http://www.111drugstore.com (they sell real Proscar by Merck)
30 tablets (5mg Finastride) for $70 shipping included
*Proscar cut into 5 makes 150 1mg tablets at $0.46 a piece
*Proscar cut into 4 make 120 1.25 mg tablets at $0.58 a piece
http://www.inhousepharmacy.com (they sell Finpecia and Fincar made by Cipila)
90 tablets of Finpecia (1mg Finastride) for $52 shipping included ($0.58 a piece)
90 tablets of Fincar (5mg Finastride) for $89 shipping included
*Fincar cut into 5 makes 150 1mg tablets at $0.20 a piece
*Fincar cut into 4 makes 120 1.25mg tablets at $0.25 a piece
http://www.genericchemist.com (they sell Finpecia and Fincar made by Cipila)
500 tablets of Finpecia (1mg Finastride) for $255 shipping included ($0.51 a piece)
200 tablets of Fincar (5mg Finastride) for $330 shipping included
*Fincar cut into 5 makes 1000 1mg tablets at $0.33 a piece
*Fincar cut into 4 makes 120 1.25mg tablets at $0.41 a piece
I’m a not scared of generics, but through searching the discussion boards I’ve only found one person who had bought the Cipila Finpecia/Fincar that was reporting success. The majority of other comments were from people who had not been using it for more than 4 months, and they hadn’t been able to tell a difference other than experiencing the side effects.
I’m looking for a success story of someone who is maintaining and strengthening their current hair or growing new hair. If I can’t find any real stories then I’m going to buy the Proscar from http://www.111drugstore.com. I would cut it up into 4 tablets because I think it would be easier than 5.
Any advice or stories would help.
