I have 2 more months of Avodart... Contemplating finasteride now...

Well, I have two more months of Avodart available, and I'm wavering over whether I should keep going down this path, or if I should switch to the more affordable Proscar/Fincar.

Avodart has grown me a nice helmet of hair, but at, what I feel, is a considerable cost to the body. My libido is suffering (unlike finasteride, I think that Avodart builds in the system and has a chronological decrease in libido), and I'm starting to worry about the pains in my right lower right side, presumably the liver. My health insurance is not apt to give out blood tests freely, so I'd have to come up with a clever scheme to get one.

As far as my head goes, I know that Avodart certainly plays a noticeable part in the way my brain "clicks," so to speak. I have the feeling of "dryness." For example, when I lay still on my back, if I so much as move my eyes or move my head slightly, I feel that there's a dry friction going on inside my head... maybe around the brain stem.

Of course, that sounds like a pretty serious accusation to give to Avodart. It sounds pretty serious, so I'm going to have it checked out once I get the clear to talk to my GP.

I'm on a seesaw. On the one side, I've had a good experience with Avodart in regrowing my hair. It works well, although I'd only say it works for some people-- some get incredible benefit, others not so much. I'm still making up my mind on how well I've done with it.

But the cost to my body, I think, and my poor, poor libido is hurting my aspect of finding/keeping a girlfriend. I think I'd be more functional on finasteride, but I worry about losing tons of hair.

Can anyone spare some advice or opinions/suggestions for me?

My suggestion would be to drop avodart, get back on finasteride, and use a coal tar extract shampoo (eg. T/Sal) because of this:

http://www.patentstorm.us/patents/5609858/fulltext.html (search for NADP on the screen...I'm sure you know this but for anyone who doesn't you can search for text by hitting AltF)

Besides, I've read on these boards they used T/Sal in the Propecia trials.

When you are not on a limited budget I would suggest thinking about formulating your own shampoo with liquor carbonis detergens (coal tar extract) and salicylic acid (to increase blood flow).
