My hair has never looked this good. Been on 0.675 finasteride (approx) since a year and Rogaine 5% 16Month (crown and hairline) and nizoral 2% once per week. My hair line is recovering nicely, my crown is covered with some nice thick hair (Dont see the scalp anymore).

I have never seen more than 10 hair in the shower (with towel on the drain, that way i dont miss any when i count them)

From the hair i am loosing, lots of them (85%) are thinner at the root. Dont know if this is good, but by looking at the mirror, Im a happy man.

I have seen lots of peoples asking if the hair was thinner at the root what would this mean.... I bet it means you are in the right direction for a recovery (based on my experience)

Have a nice day all

If the hair is thinner and white close to the root, it's probably not substantial thinning, but if it sorta tapers from the tip to the root then it's something to worry about.

Any good story is a success story. Congratulations. Keep us posted.

what you are saying here is contradictng itself

you are saying if it is thinner close to the root its not bad , then you say if it tapers to the root ( thinner at the root ) then it is bad

which is it ?

If it gradually goes from thick to thin, then it's not a good thing. If the hair is thick, but right at the root it is thin, then it's ok.

all hair tapers...even long hair can taper at the end. that doesnt mean its a bad sign. thats the way the follicle grows the hair. the reason why you dont see every hair you lose with a vellus like top is because of your haircuts.

on the other hand, if you're losing SHORT hair (shorter than the rest of the hair on your head) and its tapering off towards the end (not the bulb) , that indicates short cycling, meaning the hair couldnt grow any further and its anagen has been reduced. this usually indicates male pattern baldness.

If you're on a regimen though and you're having improvements, I dont see how it could be a bad thing to see shed short-cycling hair. Couldn't it be that the follicle is now gonna produce a healthy hair since that short-cycling hair is outta the way?

could swing both ways. that hair might come out thinner and more vellus like with the next cycle..or if your treatment kicks in , in time the follicle might reproduce a hair with a greater anagen period than before.

on a seperate note...why the hELL am i shedding nothing but vellus hair since taking finasteride. i never ever noticed a single vellus hair before i took finasteride. and i now i'm losing so much vellus hair from the base of my neck..(the back)

Are you one of those people who assume that changes in the health of hair follicles (continued miniaturization from male pattern baldness, or enlargement in response to treatment) occur ONLY after the current cycle is completed?

Bryan I have asked you before:

Please give an article or study or at least tell us what you think happens with the changes regarding the hair follicle diameter. Can the shaft become thicker during the current cycle?

I think it can, sure. I can't present any evidence to PROVE it, but I really can't think of any a priori reason why that couldn't happen.

Cut 'n pasted from first page of PubMed search results:

J Am Acad Dermatol. 2001 Sep;45(3 Suppl):S81-6.

Possible mechanisms of miniaturization during androgenetic alopecia or pattern hair loss.

Whiting DA.

Baylor Hair Research and Treatment Center, Dallas, TX 75246, USA. dad[spam shield]@dallasassocderm.com

In androgenetic alopecia, or pattern hair loss, follicles undergo miniaturization, shrinking from terminal to vellus-like hairs. Traditionally, this process is thought to progress gradually over a number of follicular cycles. However, it is unlikely that miniaturization can be explained only by a series of progressively shorter anagen cycles. Simple calculations show that this process would take too long for significant miniaturization to occur secondary to shorter anagen cycles alone, especially in view of the latent lag period seen in pattern hair loss that occurs between the loss of a telogen hair and the appearance of an anagen hair. Evidence is presented to support a new concept that miniaturization is an abrupt, large-step process that also can be reversed in 1 hair cycle, as has been shown clinically, with confirmatory histologic evidence, in patients with pattern hair loss responding to finasteride treatment. It is hypothesized that the miniaturization seen with pattern hair loss may be the direct result of reduction in the cell number and, hence, size of the dermal papilla.
