I always thought smaller bald guys had it better.

I always thought that being bald didn't look so bad on the smaller framed guys.

Some well-dressed smaller frame guys I see on campus look good the way they are (in a completely heterosexual way). I see them all the time with chicks (no, I'm not lying to you ;))

I had believed larger guys had it worse because it looks more akward (larger head in relation to larger body perhaps?). A friend told me that being my size (6'4, wide wide frame heading towards amateur bodybuilder) would look funny as bald because my body is too large.

But I've recently been told it's okay to be bald and a well-built tall guy with a tan.

I guess it really depends on other criteria like facial structure, too. But what do you think? Can big, tall, wide (no fat) muscular bald dudes look fine to women?

(BTW I'm a natural bodybuilder, no steroids and I don't look like a roid freak like the guys you see in bodybuilder mags. I'm just very large and bulky who lifts in spare time.)

It's got nothing to do with size in my opinion, it's all about the shape of your head and facial features.

Agreed. Look at that REM guy...In my opinion the bald look suited him. And whos that guy from star trek..? Girls love him apparently

I think that the bald look only suits people with masculine features eg strong jawline, muscular build etc. Eg Vin diesel, Jason Statham, Bruce Willis. This is why many sports stars can get away with it.
Skinny pale guys with no hair often look like they have cancer.
The Samson effect:
hair = Youth, Virility
No hair = Old and weak.

Guys with masculine jawlines, smaller noses, and well-defined and arched eyebrows (a tan doesn't hurt) look a lot better bald than guys who don't have those features.

Shape of head is important...rounder the better...and strong neck and build helps.

With your frame a good tan you cannot fail to look good...you sound like a good candidate for a Tarantino film...

REM guy looks ill and Bruce only looks good sometimes. Agassi is one small guy though that pulls it off really well.

Good skin colour is really important..almost every black guy I know now has their head buzzed and they all look good...so keep that build and lots of tan.

I'm starting to think that for my head it may look fine if it ever gets to that point. I have well pronounced eyebrows (but not overly thick and bushy), a good jaw and neck.

If I ever go bald on the top I would seek a transplant to get enough hair so that the top has the stubble look. Check out this picture of Jason Statham:

I like that shadow look on top even though he couldn't grow it out (too wispy and thin). I'd like to have more hair up top than he does, but enough to give it the shadowy stubble look is many times better than cueball bald IMO.

How many hair transplant (whatever quantity is measured in.. FUE?) pieces do you suppose you'd need to maintain a shadow stubble look on a completely bald top? Say for someone his size of head. 2000?

I think if you keep your hair very short like Statham, you could get away with very minimal transplant numbers. All you need is a shadow, and everyone's hair looks thinner when it's shaved down to a 0 or 1 on the clippers.

Once the injectible (that's how it is currently), tanning solution comes to market, being bald won't be too bad. You inject yourself a few times per week and you maintain a nice tan year round. Even people that are albino white can tan on this stuff. You can find it currently, but it's expensive.

3,000 grafts to obtain minimal shadowing and a nice tan = cha-ching.

The bit of stubble on top makes all the difference, you can bet Jason Statham (amongst others with this look) is on propecia to keep his scalp from going cue ball. If you intend to have a hair transplant to get that bit of hair then it better be FUE because you cant buzz down with a strip scar showing.

re:

Taking a pill a day to preserve your looks is different then burning your skin to change your appearance.
Baldness has forever been an issue with men. Tanning has not. Are we really better off if men continue to tan, wax their body hair and get cosmetic procedures. Man up ladies!
BTW, I do have a lot of respect for a man who has the self esteem to accept his hairloss as just natural. I look forward to the day when I can accept it.
I have never met a man who goes tanning and is not vain.....never!

It is different, but it's also the same in a few ways:

1) you make the effort to get a propecia prescription, same as you make the effort to go to a tanning salon

2) you risk your health by exposing your skin to UV rays, but you also risk your health by exposing yourself to a drug that has known side effects - one of which involves growing b**ch tits.

which is more feminine? frequenting tanning salons or having b-cups?

c'mon, this is really all about vanity in general.

word. we should all aspire to be that comfortable with ourselves.

men who tan are definitely vain. so too are men who are contributing posters on hairlosstalk discussion forums.

for the record, i'm not a frequent "tanner," but i will go a few times before leaving for tropical locales ala mexico, thailand, etc.

An effort to get a prescription? I went in for a physical and asked the doctor for a finasteride proscar script, no effort really.
finasteride trials were strenuous and confirmed a risk factor that was so so small. Tanning is awful for you and not just from the risk of skin cancer.
Is it vain to use finasteride? I would say so, but hairloss is something that appears to bother almost all men to different degrees so it has its own category IMO.
My point is simple. Men should act like men. The fact that women spend billions of dollars and countless hours of their free time trying to project a certain image is something that we should critique and not emulate. Going tanning is so ridiculous and in the end you are just faking it which is pathetic IMO. Obviously others think it is normal, I do not. I do not embrace the feminization of American males.

American males? Surely males live in other countries too....
