How will India's new drug patent law effect generics?

I just read this article about India's new drug patent law: http://www.sci-tech-today.com/story.xht ... y_id=31764

I just hope this doesn't mean an end to generics like Fincar, or atleast an end to them being half affordable.

Any of you have any insight about this issue?

The law won't be retrospective, so all the generic stuff we have now is safe. The big drug companies just want assurances that in the future their drugs won't get ripped off almost immediately. I suspect it still might happen though, perhaps in the more disreputable developing economies around the world. I wouldn't be surprised if in the future South America or Africa gave international trade rules the big middle finger and flouted the convention.
