How to best apply Rogaine foam?

Hey guys, I know this has been asked a lot, but what do you guys think is the best way to apply Rogaine foam? I'm just switching over from the liquid, and I definitely like the fact that it dries right away, but I'm not sure if I'm actually getting any on my scalp. I'm using it on my front hairline, so I parted my hair in five different places and filled the cap up halfway. I scooped out a little bit each time, but when I applied it to my scalp, it seems like it all just got stuck in the surrounding hair. Anybody have any advice on this? Also, the foam that does make contact with my scalp seems to dry almost immediately and doesn't really give me a chance to "massage" it in as it says in the directions. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I, too, have just switched to Rogaine foam for my morning minoxidil fix. I have exactly the same sorts of questions.

For me, it makes all the other minoxidil products I have tried seem like grease and/or glue. The foam just seems too good to be true.

It probably is! I doubt that the foam works as well as the liquid.

Farrel on HLH who has been a minoxidil user for years says its been better for him. Said he got some more hairs to go terminla with the foam that didnt respond that well to the liquid he had been using for years prior.

As somebody here on HairLossTalk.com has pointed out recently, the way they advertise Rogaine Foam leaves a lot to be desired. There's no sound way that they really compare the two...

But Farrell does not use it twice a day. He uses it once a day with occasional breaks. He finds it harsh - for various reasons - and potent I believe.

Risky to cite others, of course, and I am not sure of the protocol about citing from other hair loss sites. My apologies, if this is inappropriate.

I am not sure that if you use liquid and after that the foam, you get the same quantity on your scalp,i think the liquid is way more better,but... it makes my hair look like sh*t after i use it...but if you do something about your hair,i think that it's better to use the liquid.

It seems to me that there are (more or less) the same amount of success stories on here as using the foam as there are using the liquid; does that sound right to everybody? Does anybody think that switching to foam will cause me to lose any ground? Please advise....

I've used minoxidil liquid for years and I've used foam on and off for a while.

How I use foam:

Tools:
Rogaine Foam
Latex Gloves
Hair Brush
Two mirrors

Step 1: If I step out of the shower, I towel dry my hair leaving it damp. I comb my hair and wait about 10 minutes.

Step 2: I wear a latex glove on the hand I'll be using to apply the foam with.

Step 3: Using 2 mirrors, I part my crown first. I comb hair forward, to the sides, and down, making crown as visible as possible.

Step 3: I apply foam directly to the crown using two mirrors to see crown with a mirror in one hand over my head looking into the bathroom mirror, and foam in the other hand.

Step 4: I rub the foam in for about 5-10 seconds using 2 latex gloved fingers.

Step 5: I part my hair directly down the middle of my head from crown to hairline. I apply a thin line of foam down this line and then rub it in from side to side getting inbetween hairs.

Step 6: I part my hair again but this time about an inch from the center of myhead on the right side. I apply and rub in same way.

Step 7: I do the same except to the left of my head and apply and rub in same way.

Hairline:
I apply very small amount of foam, probably a 1/4" across my hairline every 1/2" or so and then rub it in with my glove.

I use a total of approx 3-4 cap sizes each application. I believe 30%-40% of it is absorbed by hair.

If I happen to apply the foam at a time I was unable to shower prior to, then I take my brush, let water run through it, comb my hair, keep repeating till my hair is wet/damp and scalp slightly damp. Then I apply as mentioned above.

Wet/damp hairs leave more of scalp exposed
Damp hairs absorb less foam
minoxidil is better absorbed on damp scalp (not wet!).

My view of liquid vs foam:

Liquid
Pros:
-Easy to apply directlyto scalp
-Spreads better by the tilt of your head
-Less absorbed by hair
-Can use less compared with foam
-Cheap

Cons:
-Drips down the sides, back, and fron of head, neck and face/forehead.
-Dries in about 40 minutes
-If you use it prior to sleeping, your sheets, shirt, your girl, and pillow case will turn yellow
-Itches

Foam
Pros:
-Dries fast, in about 10 minutes
-No itch

Cons:
-I believe it's almost impossible to use only their recommended dose of half cap size
-Gets caught it hairs, absorbed by hair
-Costly compared to liquid

I've seen good results with both. My crown has thickened in using foam 1x daily in 3 weks.

Having your hands warm before applying the foam seems the most important for me..the foam begins to melt and is easier to rub in. I also apply immediately after leaving the shower when hopefully my pores are more open. I'm not worried about sides - its 5% minoxidil ffs - its not even that great at regrowing hair where its applied, never mind giving you a bloated face and wrinkles.

I second the wet scalp/open pore method.

I also--through much trial and error--prefer the theory of less is more, when it comes to me. When I would get overzealous with the foam it would cause horrific sheds. When I would use ONLY half a cap and apply it sparingly to a hydrated scalp (remember it spreads beneath the skin once absorbed) I saw much better results.
