From a case study in a text book I am currently using:

"The most plausible theory is that minoxidil somehow stimulates the matrix cell of the hair follicle to regrow when it is destined to turn off. It's an overcoming of the genetic propensity to shut down. But we don't know how minoxidil modifies the metabolic activity of that cell."

The case study also mentions Rogaine being used in tandem with Retin-A.

Also, Rogaine sales from 1987-1995 approached an estimated $1 billion globally.

And, the most disappointing part:

"In 1987, the Upjohn company (Pharmacia-Upjohn since 1995) established a Hairgrowth Research unit to determine the mechanism of action of minoxidil, develop new and better minoxidil analogs, and investigate other agents that affect hair growth or loss."

So the research unit celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and the biggest improvement to date was the foam I guess:-(

I thought it's a potassium channel agonist that dilates the blood vessels.
