How long will I retain?

If I get onto finasteride and find that I am a good responder, how long will it continue to work? There doesn't seem to be much talk about this.

I would imagine that continuing to suppress DHT would mean continually keeping your hair. Is it that simple?

Is that the general consensus? Is there any scientific reason for why it loses it's effect?

Resistance
Rogaine and Propecia are sometimes subject to "resistance." The body builds up a tolerance for these drugs. The effective dose after a period of time is no longer effective. This may happen because the body starts to produce more DHT or more of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase that converts free-floating testosterone into DHT. It has been estimated that almost 30 percent of the people who have been on Rogaine and Propecia for several years no longer respond as well as they did when they started on these drugs.

Well, I guess all we can do is hope they come out with something better in 5 years....although thats highly unlikely... :(

Well..5 years is not the only time frame you can save.

5 years with Finasteride..
couple of years with Dutasteride...
5 years with spironolactone-Revivogen
5 years with 5% minoxidil...

almost 17 years...

Mattj that answer is impossible to answer. People telling you 5 years is merely based on the fact Merck's Propecia trials only lasted 5 years, so there is no evidence to prove its effectiveness after 5 years. There are many people on here who have taken Propecia for over 5 years and had good effects.

there is a time line diagram that i've seen, and i'm sure you've seen it.

hair count goes way down at the 5 year mark, at least to baseline.

Don't listen to jeffsss he is quoting one peiece of info that in no way represents all cases. Further more he has been trolling the forum quite heavily due to his shedding, so in my mind he is losing his credibility.

finasteride does seem to loose it's effectiveness over the years probably becuase it only decreases DHT, rather than inhibit its formation completely. So after some time the remaining DHT still causes loss For some this may be apparent at 5 years, and others maybe 10, or even as little as two. And even then if you get more hair out of it you may very well be as good off as you are today in 10 years. It really depends more on how hard you are hit with male pattern baldness and how well you respond. For many male pattern baldness hits in waves, for some it is a constant thinning towards complete baldness. We are all diferent and no one can say where you will be on the Norwood scale in a year from now regardless if you are on finasteride or not.

If I were you I wouldn't worry about what may or may not happen in the future and just be happy if you can get some slow down in loss or improvement in the present
