How long after you lose hair before it is irreversible?

I begn taking Propecia when I noticed 4 years ago that I had some receeding and my hair was thinning. I used minoxidil along with it at first but got tired of the hassel and just went with Propecia for convenience. It has since receeded and thinned some more but I feel that Propecia has begun working as I no longer shed quite like I was. I am now thinking of using minoxidil again to possibly see if I can regrow hair in the front. (hairline) Is this possible if it has been gone for years? I feel like I didn't give it enough time to work the first time. I could pass for a full head of hair if I were able to bring forward my hairline.

John -- as I understand it, the longer the follicle has been dormant, the less likely it will rejuvenate back to your hair's heyday. The opposite it also true. So if it looks like the Propecia is no longer getting it done, there are a host of other stimulants (including minoxidil) that you could add to your routine (look at my regimen, lol). The Rogaine Foam is way easier and less messy to use now than the stuff you used four years ago, so you may want to look at that if ease of use is your concern.

Can you rub it all over like shampoo?

I think if you use the exact recommended dose, and you have any semblance of hair left on the area you are applying it, then it will not be as effective as liquid minoxidil, simply because I believe your hair soaks up more foam than it does with the liquid. For that reason, since I am thinning on my vertex (but not bare skin) I apply probably close to twice the recommended amount on my head, to ensure that the vertex especially gets ample amount of foam. I think if the recommended amount of foam were used on a shaved head, then it probably is just as effective if not more so than the liquid, but that's just my opinion.
