How Did You Find Your Derm?

I am having a difficult time finding a hair specialist. Any tips? How did you find yours?

I went to see a derm, who referred me to a hair specialist. I am not able to get an appointment until several months down the road, and I cannot find another hair specialist anywhere. I would like to see one asap.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news (or good news?) but researching the 2 or 3 hair loss sites on your own will make you more educated on hair loss than any dermatolgist or "hair specialist" is.

There are of course exceptions to this rule, and if you still wish to see a specialist, there may possibly be some nuggets of information you might have missed that they can contribute, but on the whole, pretty much none of us here rely on a physician to help us with our hair loss.

They either tell you that you aren't even losing your hair, or they are completely incapable of thinking outside the box (you guys think HairLossTalk.com is too focused on the big three? try talking to a doctor!).

A physician is important however if you want to take Propecia and need someone to monitor you while you are on it. This is always recommended by HairLossTalk.com. Same with any skin conditions or authentic dermatological problems. As far as just purely getting information or advice, if you have male pattern baldness, they *usually* aren't much help.

I got a referral from my family doctor.

I just asked him to refer to the best derm available and he did so right away, so seeing your family Doctor might be a good idea.

This is where I get REALLY PO'ed I cannot get a physician to order my labs. I do not know what my DHEA, andro, or DHT levels are. I know my test levels, but getting that took a monumental act of pleading of my primary "physician." Thyroid and liver test normal.

I cannot believe how callous some physicians can be. They look upon this as a non-life threatening condition, and thus, not worth treating. THEY DO NOT SEEM TO REALIZE THAT THE MENTAL EFFECTS ARE, IN A WAY, JUST AS SIGNIFICANT AS ANY LIFE-THREATENING CONDITION. I do not want to be bald. But I sometimes wish I could make my physician bald. Let him see, firsthand, just how "trivial" this is.

I am very angry right now....
