How bad does it have to get before considering buzzing it?

I know this varies for everyone. Some guys only have to have a small imperfection, others will still put up with an Norwood 4 or 5, and still keep hair on their head. I believe that blacks, latinos, asians may have it a bit easier as they would probably looked better with their hair completely buzzzed, but I'm a white guy, I'm 30, and I guess I'm lucky that I've had significant amounts of hair by now, but I know that in the next 10 years that will change.

Ultimately, you can't fight hairloss forever. You can try but it seems like it will eventually catch up with you perhaps.

I have a head/hair shape like I'd say devon sawa, leonardo dicaprio..kind of like that wavy, brown/blonde hair, same light complexion, rounded face/head, but the only difference is, I've been receeding since I was a teen, but been maintaining, and styling/cutting a certain way since then to make it look passable so that I may not have to cut it all off. I've unfortunately hit a point now that I fear even going out to the salons, because when they wash my hair and comb it back, it looks absolutely dreadful and makes me look like some swamp thing/troll. However when it's all combed to the sides and forward, dried up, put in the right conditioner/product and styled right, it looks like all the balding spots are filled, in and it actually looks quite nice. Not too, too bad yet. Another 5 years maybe, but for now I can still pull off having somewhat longer, wavy hair.

However, my doctors refuse to prescribe me Avodart as they keep saying it's not approved for hairloss and won't even give it to me to experiment, and keep saying how it's the SAME exact thing as propecia/proscar...not much of a difference at all, and my only option is just going to a dermatologist and trying my luck there.

At this point what I want to know is this: I'm afraid of cutting it all off because of how dramatically that might change my look, and if I can pull it off, and/or how to possibly get used to that. It may just completely ruin me, and that will be terrible for my mental health, and it will take lots of therapy and I don't even know what to possibly get through it, or maybe it might actually look good.

BUT, looking like you're balding badly, or in an unflattering way, is also devastating, and I prefer either having hair or no hair.

The balding look I think is even worse than not looking that great with no hair.

So what I ask you is, how bad does it have to be in order to consider shaving it all off. I also dye/highlight at times to experiment and that goes a very long way in making it look better, but I just don't know.

I'd say I have a mature, receeding hairline, but with the length of my hair which partially even covers my ears, so my facial/head structure...skin color...

I either keep it or lose it entirely.

Just imagine those actors I mentioned with either no hair, or full hair, or now receeding.

I'm pretty sure no or full would work, and the others may end their careers, haha.

you can buy avodart online without a prescription...
If you were gonna cut it all anyways, then you might as well try some drugs for a year and try your luck for a major regrowth

It sounds like you still have a decent amount of hair and it looks good when styled correctly. Keep taking Propecia in the meantime and save up for a hair transplant. When things get to a point where you feel you need to buzz it you can go in and get the transplant, who knows what will be available in 10-20 years. But chances are high that it will be something much much better than what we have now.

Thanks guys. I totally agree with you, but I just don't know or can't predict exactly how much hair I'll have by then, or how much I lose and what not. Also, how do we know for sure that propecia, avodart, rogaine, etc....all that stuff even WORKS?

It doesn't for everyone right? I'm sure it does work 'to a degree,' but how can we be SURE?

I honestly CANNOT say after 10+ years if the stuff worked, if I was imagining things, or if it didn't work at all. I dont know if it slowed anything down, or ...it's just hard to predict. We're all different I guess.

Also, if you put anything on your scalp, I'm not necessarly talking plugs, but whatever else...won't that if it sticks to it, harm the hair follicles, or endanger the growth of the hair you have underneath?

I'm just so confused and not really sure what to do.

CAn you guys PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE link me to some sites where I can get avodart online, legally? I'm sorry I'm just in a panic mode, and I haven't been on this site in years, and I really just got lost, and lost touch as well. I don't think I know what I'm doing at this point, haha.

But yes, as of today, this month, next month....perhaps this year, no I may not cut it all off,...but I have no way of predicting what it will look like NEXT year. I CAN afford a hair transplant, generally speaking with my income, etc, BUT I'm NOT sure exactly how many sessions I'll need and how much it wil ultimately cost, and whether or not those results will be permanent or what, anyone know?

One good thing I have going is that I have TONS of donor hair, if that were to come up....but my finances have been getting devoted to other things as well....

I guess newer cars, clothes, travelling, ect was more important to me.

Okay anyways back to topic. I can't believe it's 2012,...and we still don't have any breakthroughs. People have been waiting forever. What's the deal?

If they don't have anything new by 2020,.... :sobbing:

I don't understand... did you take finasteride and now want to upgrade to avodart, or you just want to jump straight on avodart??

No no no no. Actually many things. What I'm saying is, I'm NOT satisfied entirely with my current regimen, and am afraid, that it may not work for long, so I want to add avodart to the mix, NOT stopping anything else just taking maybe propecia somedays, then skipping and taking advodart on other days, at the same time.

What, is that not a good idea, or worse, not advised to do at all?

I thought that way I could get more bang from it all, and if that doesn't work then I should just give up because those seem to be the bigger treatments out today.

I was actually told by my own primary care physician that I should NEVER take both propecia and avodart at the same time becuase it could make my blood pressure drop dangerously low,...but if I'm taking a small dose of each, and take them days apart I don't think that should be an issue, should it?

Not sure what do do! Oh and where are the links to the avodart sites I asked about, or some links to perhaps where on this forum I can find that information?

Come on guys, be of some use here.
