Just thought I'd share my spironolactone tinkerings with you - n.b. i'm sure there are better diy's out there:

I was impressed with spironolactone's rep as an antiandrogen, and in generic tablet form it is pretty cheap. So I thought, hey, I might as well give it a go. I got tablets, and I have experimented mixing them with various media; vodka, glycerine and rosewater, minoxidil, and, bizarrely, cucumber moisturiser.

Things to note:
spironolactone is very poorly water soluble. You basically need alcohol or alcohol containing products to do it.
spironolactone is volatile in solution. This would suggest that it is perhaps better to crush a single tablet at a time for use so as to ensure potency.
Dissolved spironolactone has an unfortunate tendency to give off an odour of skunk cannabis when dissolved. I discovered this the other day when someone commented that my head smells of cannabis :)

My results best to worst:
Cucumber moisturiser
Vodka/Glycerin and rosewater
Minoxidil 5%

My theory is that dissolving the tablets leaves the molecules prone to degradation, causing them to release the noxious gas. This is because although I could not feel any powder residue in the vescicles I was using to dissolve my concoctions, they were cloudy, in the way that tapwater sometimes is from having loads of tiny bubbles in it. I think that perhaps where the cream helped with the smell is in being too thick to allow the bubbles to penetrate the surface en masse. Alternatively, it could be something acting as a stabiliser in the cream.

Vodka/Glycerin and Rosewater dissolved the tablets tolerably well, though I think that the cucumber moisturiser was better. Importantly, they still smelt a bit. Worst of all was the minoxidil, which stank, and which did not do a hugely good job of dissolving the 25mg pills I was using, unless I used a lot of it, which was wasteful.

So cucumber moisturiser was the winner, although my one caveat about using creams, is their potential ability to clog up follicles. (I don't know if they do, this is just supposition) This is why I might well go with the rosewater or vodka.
