My name is Meghan, I'm 38, male to female transsexual. I hope you guys don't mind if I ask you a few questions. I was pointed in this direction from a TS site I visit. Obviously in our community, hair loss is a major concern. Luckily, we take many drugs which are a part of the medical part of our transition. I'd like to get some input about my particular case if you guys would be so kind.
So, before I started on any medication, I had some thinning on my crown. It wasn't terrible, but it was definitely noticeable when I had shorter hair. Now my hair is growing out. It's long enough for part of it to cover the thinning part of the crown, especially if I blow dry and flat iron my hair straight back to cover it. But, I still have a thin spot up there and it is just driving me CRAZY. If I get it in the right place, it's fine. Sometimes if I sleep on it wrong or style it wrong, it's visible. It's really not a good combination for a TS who is going full time in 2 months.
So, here's my regimen:
Propecia (Finasteride) - 1 Mg. daily (been on that since 6/07)
Spironolactone - 200 mg daily (100 mg in am, 100 in pm) since 9/07
Progesterone - 1 pill daily (not sure how much prog. is in this)
Minoxidil 5% topical liquid - apply am and pm, 1 ml on crown
Ok, so I have definitely noticed some hair growing back on my crown, I noticed it after about 6 months on Propecia and 3 months on the other stuff. I started the Minoxidil topical at the recommendation of my dermatologist. I asked him what else could I do to grow hair back and he said all the stuff I was on were dream drugs to help with it, but that Minoxidil would help too.
So, my question to you guys is: Should I keep taking the Minoxidil? I'm starting to lose hair back there and I'm just really scared that if I lose it, it'll be gone forever. What if I grow back little tiny micro hairs instead of normal ones? What if people will be able to look at the back of my head and tell? I'm thinking if I did quit the Minoxidil, maybe the continued Propecia and spironolactone will make some of it grow back. I'm just really worried that I might end up with non-normal looking hair on my crown, like really really thin hair that doesn't grow to normal size.
Sorry I took up so much space in here, I just figured you guys would be able to help me. Thank you, Meghan
