Hi all new to this forum any info treatment advice someone can give me i would be grateful. About 6 months ago i noticed my facial hair was thinning and also my sideburns i now have about 40% of my facial gone and both of my sideburns have vanished up to almost the top of my ears. The facial hair i dont mind as i never grow a beard and its actually a good thing as it takes alot less time to shave.
But the sideburns are a worry as its just plain weird and lm finding it harder to go out as it looks like ive had an amateur haircut using a bowl on my head. the sideburn areas have no hair just really smooth skin.
The only treatment/consultation ive had is with my local family doctor (5 months ago) who told me to have a blood test which came back -ve which he then informed me its natural hairloss (alopecia) my fathers side of the family has hairloss history.
I am going to see a skin specialist next couple of days but if anyone has info, treatments or anyone have this condition i would appreciate it.
i am 43 years old i have thinning hair at the front of my head but its been like that for about 15 years the sides and back of my skull have thick hair growth but just stops at the tops of my ears.

Thanks for the reply I got a bloodtest to check for a thyroid problem is the same as having a hormone level test?
My test result came back negative . I will be visiting my doctor tomorrow may ask to redo blood test just in case errors can be made and will be asking for a consultation to a dermatologist. not sure what else i can do i will report back here with my findings.

losing facial hair and sideburns is exactly what happened to me when i took saw palmetto. Are you taking any saw palmetto? is it in your multivitamin? Do you drink soy milk or eat flax seeds?

I'd better point out i'm no doctor, and i've not studied biology since i was 16, a long long time ago, but the disappearance of facial hair to me would suggest exceedingly low levels of testosterone / dht, although it could be a number of things.

I've never had a blood test done, but from what i know ( a little knowledge is a dangerous thing) the checks for proper thyroid function will be different to checking for sex hormones, definitely ask the Doctor about it.

<<edit to add>>

What happened to jksl, sounds to be to be hormonal as well. Soy can really do a number on some people, it may depend on your intestinal bacteria, i know that when i tried some isoflavone supplements (on top of propecia like a stupid boy) i suffered some of the common side effects, no boobs thankfully.

thanks again for the replys i dont take any vitamins at all and dont use soymilk
i have never heard of saw palmetto so i doudt i have ever taken any.
Sir Chugalot i believe your last post makes sense i will definetely be asking about sex hormone levels. Dont most guys that want to become women take some type of hormone drug and the first thing to go is facial hair?
Visiting doctor this morning will be the first thing i ask.
The only thing in my diet that i know is not good is i eat alot of meat mainly chicken and beef. Is a high protein diet bad for hair or does chicken meat contain hormones that promote hair loss.
will post what my doctor tells me thanks to all for replys
