Heres my story .....

Since I haven't previously introduced myself I will now.
I'm 44 and been losing hair since I was 17, first it was just receding, by the time I was mid-20's I had resigned myself to the fact that I had no choices, I would be a baldy. You see at that time there was no propecia or rogaine. I continued to recede throughout my 20's and into my mid-30's, by late 30's I started really thinning on top and losing hair on my crown.
Here's my experience over the past 27 years: It comes out in phases, hair loss will slow down and speed up in an endless cycle as the years pass. For some it will be different than that, but majority will be a lot like my experience.
Last year I heard a commercial for Avacor (I hear the groans from all of you, LOL), I ordered a 6 month supply. After I ordered I thought 'I should have checked this out first on the internet' and proceeded to check out the different forums. I was disheartened to see all the negative posts even before the stuff arrived. Once it was here I decided to give it a try anyway. After 2 months I noticed that there was some growth on top, but because my hair loss isn't a life consuming event I didn't keep at it regular. Summer is gone now and I have more free time so I figured if the avacor did produce results then maybe rogaine would work better. Two weeks ago I started rogaine and guess what? I have growth already in places where it was slick on the top of my head. Is this unusual? I don't know, but I am encouraged by it. I don't want to be 20 again, but a little more hair would be cool and my girlfriend might like it too.

Considering you've been balding for so long, it is unusual. Normally minoxidil is good at transforming vellous hairs into terminal ones. But in slick areas...usually they don't see much improvement. Pity you didn't realise minoxidil is good stuff earlier, to hell with avacor & it's makers.
