Hi I'm 22, my hairline has receded, my crown is fine. My family doesn't seem to bald at the crown, everybodys hairline recedes but it stops at a certain point and didn't get worse. I'm hoping that may be the case with me, however 4 months ago I went to the doctors and got prescribed finasteride. My DHT levels were never tested, so they might not have actually been that high and I might just be screwing with my bodys chemistry with finasteride. I want to get my DHT levels checked, what is considered "high" is there a number? I don't want a quack doctor telling me they are normal when in actuality are high enough to cause my balding. Also how long do I need to be off finasteride before i can get my levels tested..

thanks a lot guys, hope somebody can help.

If you get them tested there will be a reference range that comes along with the results. Why do you want to stop finasteride and get your levels checked?

I assumed my dht levels we're high. The doctor never tested me he just prescribed Finn when I asked for it, told him my hairline has gone back and he gave it to me. Thing is, everybody in my familys hairline goes back a bit but they don't bald on the crown until like 50s so, maybe this was just my body still maturing and my hairline wasn't going to keep going back.. Which I kinda hope, anybody here that can relate?

Family history isn't very good to go off of. The inheritance of male pattern baldness is so complicated it likely you could see any result when it comes to where your hair loss is headed. There is no way to tell.

DHT isn't necessarily related to high dht levels but a sensitivity to dht, and this is well documented.

so what do you guys recommend I do? I don't want to take this stuff if I don't need to assuming my hairline has receded as far as it's going to. I am only 22 and just started getting beard development growth like crazy, so I really don't want this dht compressing to halter anything.

If you can safely assume that your hair has stopped receding by at age 22 that is fine, but pretty damn unlikely. With me, I thought my hairline stopped receding in college but I quickly learned that I have a diffuse pattern of hairloss, which got progressively worse while still preserving my hairline. For men with aggressive hairloss, the early to mid 20's are the worst years

Are you on Finn? I know i was told not to judge my familys hair but nobody seems to bald, and as we get older doesn't our hairline change its shape? I might of just overreacted and shouldn't be on finasteride, but now I don't know if i should continue to take it or not. Really don't want to affect any beard development by messing with my dht levels.

no one can tell whether you will continue to lose your hair. It is a total guess. There is nothing really to lose by taking finasteride except a small risk of temporary sides and maybe a hundred dollars a year or something (probably less). It is your choice to make

There is no such thing as a mature hairline. With Androgenetic Alopecia, the hair pattern slowly forms a shoehorse type pattern. If your hairline is following this pattern or if you notice any diffuse thinning, you have Androgenetic Alopecia. Do you mind posting some pics, i cant really know for sure without any visuals

Oh and yes I am on finasteride and have been on it for the past 3 weeks(generic .5mg per day)

I gotta be honest with you, it sure looks like androgenic alopecia considering the recession at the temples. If I were you I would start on finasteride, but that is just my opinion. I think you would have pretty good results and would be glad you tried it. I've been taking it for a month now and have no recognizable side effects and hair is looking better(my brother noticed without the knowledge of me taking finasteride).

I've been on finasteride since December, been off for 4 days now though as I'm debating on whether or not to stop. I haven't really gotten any sides I don't think, other then watery eject. I haven't noticed my hair get any better though, it might be getting more blonder, hard to tell.

My bad, I thought you mentioned you were thinking of taking finasteride, I must have been on two threads at the same time. On that note, I would continue taking it because according to my doctor, it could take up to a year to see results. I would imagine you would be sacrificing some "beard quality" since dht is related to body hair growth but for me, the decision between facial hair and male pattern baldness is an easy one. I guess it depends on how badly you want a thick beard.

your hair can't look better only a month after taking finasteride it is pretty much impossible. Your shampoo/differing hair length is probably responsible for any imagined regrowth. Just because you haven't seen regrowth doesn't mean it is not working. Not only is 4 months extremely early, but it will slow down or stop your hair loss, even if there is no regrowth. By discontinuing it you are ensuring that you lose hair at the highest rate possible

sigh lol, I just wish it wouldn't affect beard development. Yeah I want to keep my hair but at the same time I want to be able to grow a decent beard like the rest of my family, and of course it finally starts coming in this last half year right when I start taking finasteride -.-

Yes he could.
You could always get a beard transplant. I heard this is a growing trend in nyc
If it's any consolation stymied beard growth or body hair retardation is not a real common side effect. It's a relatively new complaint and the good news it is not physically harmful to experience. a I guess compared to the elongating list of horrific finasteride complaints steadily surfacing it's an ironically refreshing side effect. If your beard is more important than your scalp hair then you already have made your decision. I can tell that while I was on finasteride.(for approx. 9 months) my beard growth was never disrupted. It certainly is interesting how every one's tastes is so varied for example, I would trade in my beard for a healthy full of hair and not think twice about it. To think how much currency I would save from never needing a damn razor again. Thanx for sharing Blast and good luck.

While I would not want to be bald, if the time comes when I do go bald, i would rather have a beard and be bald, then just be bald with clean shaven. If only I could figure out whether or not my hairline would recede more or not, or better yet not have to had started finasteride until my beard development was complete. At any rate, i think i will stick out finn for the next year and see what my hair looks like then, and hopefully my beard continues to develop, even if it's a slower pace as long as it develops that's all i hope for.

thanks everybody for the responses, if anybody has any more stories, i'd be grateful to hear, particularly younger guys whom started finasteride while developing a beard.
