I would worry very much if I were you. if you are afraid of finasteride because of the prostate cancer history in your family, you should try RU - the best topical to stop hairloss.

Just an update guys -

I went to see a hair surgeon and dermatologist (only for his opinion and not for a transplant). He was surprised that I was so concerned about my hair because in his opinion it looked normal.

I showed him the thinning hairline and he told me that pretty much everyone gets that and he showed me where the imaginary line which he would usually try to bring restoration too which was an inch or two about my hairline.

He did notice that my hair was very thin...which it always has been and said it could be diffuse thinning/miniaturisation but said it was hard to tell as he had not seen my hair before. I pointed out my crown and he said that I had plenty of hair there and there was no room if he wanted to transplant for new hair - just that my individual hairs all over were a bit thin.

I discussed minoxidil and finasteride with him - he said not to mess around with anything that is not FDA approved. He said that I could try finasteride as a precaution that my hair didn't get worse and added that it was way more effective than minoxidil but pointed out that minoxidil was also proven to slow down male pattern baldness and regrow hair.

I was wary of finasteride and all the side effects - he advises that people take it after they've had children but wasn't aware of cases of serious irreversible sexual side effects in his patients. He did say that with prostate cancer history in my family then this could be an issue as it was very hard to detect cancer if on finasteride (even with changing calculations) and said you needed to be off finasteride for at least 6 months for detection of prostate cancer, He said finasteride could mask symptoms of prostate cancer so by the time people find out they have it, it has already spread.

He advised that if I was concerned enough about my hair and side effects of finasteride then I should use 5% minoxidil all over...I'm wary of doing this all over as I believe it 'may' have made my hair loss worse (he disagreed) - so I will use it just on the thinner areas of the hairline for now and see if it progresses.

He also added that nizoral may assist a bit if hair loss was caused by poor quality of the scalp/fungus.

All in all, he didn't think I had so much to worry about.

Comments?

5% minoxidil all over is a bad idea. First of all, using that much is expensive. Also, those hairs will become dependent on the minoxidil and you have to do that for life. Just use it on the thinning areas and you'll be fine. You still have a good head of hair. That may diminish over time since you are not using finasteride, but minoxidil will not preserve your current state of hair.

Here is the thing about finasteride:
It does not work on the upper temples and receding hairlines.
10% will get no results.
about 30% will continue losing albeit at a slower rate
about 30% will maintain
about 30% will regrow often times measly.
DHT direct effect is a theory so don't pay too much attention to it.

minoxidil is effective, according to the original maker, for 90% of users. However, an independent study puts it at only 52%. I can't recall how this efficacy is distributed among this 52%.

Nizoral is a far thrid. I would guess at 15% efficacy?

Can somebody verify these?

MBP is associated with prostate cancer. Dairy is associated with prostate cancer. What does that tell you? Is dairy involved in male pattern baldness. That's up to you. Note that association does not mean causation.

how much dairy do you take?

I wouldn't know about the efficacy of other treatments.

There are a number of people who have fixed there receding hairline and upper temples with finasteride. It is rare but it does happen.

Why?

No offence dude but I'm likely to place more importance on the opinion of a hair transplant surgeon and qualified dermatologist than anyone on here. And I definitely won't be touching anything not FDA approved...it's expensive and risky and i think takes managing hair loss to a new extreme.

I asked him about this dependancy issues and he said that it wasn't possible for minoxidil to make healthy hair worse.

Aside from that, his only real comment on my hair was that the individual hairs were very thin all over (making me a bad candidate for a transplant in future), and that maybe it was diffuse miniaturisation, but he couldn't be sure because I told him (backed up by my partner who was with me) that my hair had always been naturally thin. So maybe this is why he said to use minoxidil all over if I were worried -- because he thought maybe I could be thinning all over.

btw thanks for your other comments.

How much more do you want to know?

Do you drink milk, tea or coffee. If so, how often and how much.
Exactly, what type of job do you do? I take it that you started on this job about three years ago? If you want more, try my regimen. If you do, be ready for a difficult road ahead.

Milk, tea or coffee? How is this relevant??

I genuinely do not think your hairline is an issue, anybody stating it is past norwood 2, I must say I disagree with. I think the shape of your hairline looks good and would not be detrimental to your appearance- nobody is going to look at you as a bald/ balding person right now unless they're at a similar stage themselves. If finasteride did nothing but let you keep what you have left then I'd be happy. I'd concentrate more on the possible diffuse thinning around your crown anyway, your hairline suits your forehead shape.
