Help! Is My Hairline Receding??? Should I Use Finasteride?

Hey everyone,

So here is my story so far. During 2017, I suddenly noticed a patch right in the centre of my head that looked noticeably more thin than the rest, I gave it a while thinking it might just be a reaction to hair wax e.t.c. and over the summer it seemed to disappear.

In the summer of 2017, I was sick of being overweight and went on an almost 2 month diet of 1000 calories a day and dropped from around 85kg to 73kg in the space of a month. About two months later I was shocked when I looked at my scalp in a lift (elevator) and saw at the part that my hairs look so sparse almost like there was none there. So I went to a doctor who looked at my scalp and suggested that it might be telogen effluvium and so I calmed down.

At the end of that year I began panicking about my hairline, no noticeable shape changes but it could have been a psychological thing, it seemed to go up a bit and raise a bit at the sides. Once again I went to a GP who completed a more thorough check and said he saw "no signs of premature balding". During the summer I kept checking just in case but overall was happy and grew my hair out as a matter of style really rather than hiding anything. Then in September I got a haircut, and it looked great! Still - I was slightly concerned about how thin my hair looked in bright lights and the fact that when rubbing product into my hair about 5 or 6 hairs would come out in my hands and have been taking photos of my hairline for about a year now. Right now however, there doesn't seem to be any evidence of shedding at all.

Fast forward to now. I am 22 years old currently. For the past two weeks I have noticed what I think is a slight change in the shape of my hairline, mostly in that it seems to be assuming more of a v-shape, and my hair looks really thin under a bright light. I have bought a packet of finasteride just so that I could start taking it at any time but have always resisted just in case I really am just imagining going bald and I end up such a long time commitment without reason. I wouldn't say I am in denial, I am just genuinely unsure if I am balding or receding and really really need the objective opinion of some people and some advice. I have included pictures from every angle to demonstrate what I mean and comparison shots from a few months ago to now.

I would really really appreciate it if you guys could let me know what you think: What norwood would you say I am? Should I start on finasteride? Other things to consider are I use mousse and blow-dry my hair on the cool air setting pretty much every morning

Looks really similar to mine, also waiting for answers. Also blow dry my hair every morning, praying to God that isn't what caused the thinning.

Gosh blow drying or gel doesn't cause any permanent hair loss. Google search hair loss myths...

Excessive washing and blow drying causes hair loss
False

Regular hair care and maintenance such as washing, combing, dyeing and blow-drying will not result in hair loss. It is good hygiene to wash hair frequently and whilst dyeing and blow-drying can damage the hair itself by pulling on it and burning, it will not cause hair to stop growing.

“High heat from blow-drying will result in dry and brittle hair but not hair loss,” Dr. Dimitrova said. “Using heat protecting serums will prevent this.”

If you’re worried about the amount of hair you see in the sink or your comb after washing or combing, take heed in the fact that shedding about 100 hairs a day is normal. If you think it could be more, take the DIY hair loss test.

You're receding, however, the middle looks to be normal. Can you part that section so that I can further see?

No, that middle part isn't thinning. That isn't to say that it never will though, but as of now; you're fine there.

Men it's normal. Just like you I lost 28 pounds in 2 months on a diet and noticed white line in the middle. I believe it's normal and it will grow back once you finish your diet.

I guess that's good, although I can see through into my scalp a bit at the front in harsh light occasionally. I am thinking of booking myself for a tricho-check at the Belgravia centre soon to get a proper diagnosis.

My only concern is how motivated are they by potentially having you as a customer a.k.a paying them money...

I wouldn't go to them, go to a stand alone dermatologist for scalp biopsy.

Got any recommendations? I’m based in the UK.
Sorry, no knowledge of clinics based in the UK, you could always rely on website ratings though. Belgravia Centre would just be anxious to make you apart of a Before/After series; providing you with information you could find online. Carolyn Evans on Youtube is a perfect example of a decent hair loss expert, unfortunately, she is based in Australia.
