I've been trying to get it tested but no one aroung my are will test drugs for the public. Has anyone else tried or can anyone have it done? It will answer alot of questions and speculation that has been going on round these boards for a while.

I spent about 2 weeks trying to have a generic finasteride tablet from India assayed before we recommended that particular provider to our users. I wanted to be sure it was legit stuff.

It was explained to me that in order to do an assay for a specific chemical, it takes thousands of dollars to create a brand new "science experiment" and the equipment and measuring tools to do it. It quite simply was too expensive, unless you are able to find a lab that is already set up to do assays for finasteride itself.

Nobody really asks for assays of finasteride so my search for that hit dead ends. I concluded that getting a finasteride pill assayed just simply is not possible unless you have about $8,000 to blow.

lab testing

Thanks for the reply. I didn't realize it was that expensive. HOwever, I think that the question that many are asking is not whether the pills actually contain finasteride but whether they contain any 'extra' harmful ingredients such as heavy metals like mercury etc. Do you think your lab would be able to just check for stuff like that? cheers.

Its possible. I dont have a lab. Just called around. Ive never heard anyone express concern about harmful metals though. The big question is always whether they're getting the "real stuff"

My searches for 'generics' and 'fincar' on this page came up with several threads. FRom these it seems that most people that take generic propecia are satisfied that it does contain finasteride (has the hair loss effects as well as the side effects) and have noticed no difference between it and propecia. the sceptics don;t seem to deny its content of finasteride, they just seem to be a bit worried about the other stuff that might be in there.

Is the assumption that other pharmaceutical companies create tablets with dangerous fillers whereas US ones don't?

The opinion seems to be that although the fda regulates the ammount of active drug that is in generic medications, they do not regulate what else is put in there. there have been instances where generics (mainly from mexicoa and china I think) have been found to have dangerous levels of other additives. The additives are the fillers that are often used to give the pill its shape. the fear is that this may be true of Cipla brand drugs (although it probably isn't).
