Hairs living or dying?

I have a balding the front middle of my head. When I part my hair, I can see some hairs that are very thin, short, but are the same color as the rest of my hair. Are these new hairs being made? Or are they just shruken hairs which are diminishing due to male pattern baldness? How can I tell the differennce between new living hairs or old dying hairs?
