Prevalence of male pattern baldness is much more common in some races than others. Caucasians are the most prone to male pattern baldness, followed closely by Afro-Caribbeans. Mexicans, East Asians, Polynesians, Aboriginal Australians and Latin Americans are much less prone to it. Native Americans and Inuits/Eskimos are completely immune to male pattern baldness. You will never, ever see a full-blooded native American who has male pattern baldness.

The genetics of male pattern baldness are not fully understood yet. What it basically comes down to is the amount of DHT in the body, and the degree of sensitivity of the follicles to this DHT and, to a lesser extent, to other androgens. I believe it to be a threshold effect, where once the amount of DHT and the degree of androgen sensitivity each reach a certain point, DHT will begin to affect your follicles. It is the level of androgen sensitivity that varies between different ethnicities, much more so than the amount of DHT in the body. Androgen sensitivity is determined entirely by genetics. Native Americans, for instance, obviously have the genes for androgen resistance, whereas caucasians have the genes for androgen sensitivity. The androgen receptor gene on the X chromosome (inherited from the mother) seems to be a major genetic factor, but there are other genes also involved, some of which can come from the father.
