Hello guys I am turning 20 this year and would firstly, like some opinions on my hair whorl to determine if I'm experiencing balding. Secondly, if I am indeed balding, I plan to purchase 5% minoxidil and apply it on my crown. Is this a good idea? Any advice/help is sincerely appreciated.

That's what a cowlick appears like. Hair spiralling out in different directions from a particular point on the head.

Looks like a standard hair whorl which is exaggerated due to the scalp shining in the light, I think you can just go on Nizoral shampoo 2-3 times a week and it will thicken the hair texture(and good for dandruff, if any), and if you can afford it I hear that caffeine shampoo is good, as well as copper peptide based ones.

but I wouldn't go on anything too crazy until another at least 5 years maybe you can consider microdosing finasteride to maintain+minimize side effects.

edit: if you're feeling super paranoid you can go see a hair specialist in a year just to get some reassurance. If you ever do go on finasteride though I highly suggest you don't take the standard 1mg dose as that would be overkill. go on a lower dose.

edit 2: if really want to do something without altering your body chemistry, you can also get a little toppik or caboki ($2 sample on their site), and then just hair spray the area for it to hold. Also start taking Biotin at least 5,000 mcg, what I do is take 10,000 mcg and cut it in two pieces so I take some in the morning and later in the evening.

thank you for the reply. Would you not recommend minoxidil in my current condition, as opposed to finasteride

Thank you for the response. could I know why you don't recommend minoxidil instead? Is there something unsafe about applying minoxidil to an area you're not sure is balding?

Right now I wouldn't recommend either to be honest, you're not even sure if you have any hairloss and you're young. Minoxidil can make shedding worse for some people and once you start it, you can't stop. Anything you gain on minoxidil will be lost if you ever decide to stop it, and for me personally the sides I experienced on minoxidil were actually worse than finasteride(rare but chest tightness and shortness of breath, as it is a vasodilator). I'm just not a fan of minoxidil because it's bad for the skin and you HAVE to apply it daily or the hairs that you gained will fall out.

Nizoral shampoo has a similar impact to hair density as Minoxidil 2% (5% is more effective than both, but like I said it's not guaranteed) and there's no side effects(at the very least, they're much more rare and mild), for me it improved hair texture.

Study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9669136 you can find it at most walmart-type stores or drug stores on the shelf. or Amazon

I've been reading the forums and studies a long time... the best, safest, and the most effective option is definitely finasteride at the moment(as unfortunate as that is), though some people do have good results from minoxidil. Setipiprant and possibly fevipiprant will be out in the future around 2019-2020, and so that's one of the reasons why i said don't bother with any of this stuff until you check back in a few years and see if it's just a whorl or it actually started thinning. then you can go from there.

edit: https://www.amazon.com/Natrol-Biotin-Maximum-Strength-Tablets/dp/B004H7GB9G?th=1 here's the biotin I take but any brand 5,000mcg or 10,000 mcg will suffice.

The best thing would be for you to go to a derm or a trichologist who would check your entire scalp for miniaturization. He'll compare the density and thickness of the hairs on your frontal scalp with the ones on the back of your head as they're resistant to dht. It's better to het a definite answer on things like hairloss. The vagueness and unsurity is the worst phase as compared to discovering whether you've hairloss or not. I was in the same boat as you but then I took things in my hand, went to a competent derm and he confirmed that I'm not balding. Do the same.
