Hi everyone, new to the board, I’m 22 years old and I have had a hair loss problem since about 17ish...I tried a lot of products since then (Nixon, regain, kevis, etc...) nothing really seemed to work. I now am going to get the Hair Transplant surgery done but I’m having trouble tiring to pick a place to get it done at. When I was researching everyone has been saying to stay away from bosley, MHR, etc... I live in Colorado and am willing to travel (but closer the better) to get the surgery done but I need your help to get a surgeon/place to get it done. Any comments or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks a lot

hey fast95er, i also started loosing my hair very young. i am now almost 40 and am going in for my first procedure this week of 2000 grafts. i only wish i would have done this sooner. so, if you are tired of the shine, then just go for it and get started on your way to covering it all up. i am using Dr. Garbutt in la jolla california. here is the link http://www.newlookmd.com/ call the orange county office and ask for ED. he is a great guy to deal with. tell him AL reffered you. god bless and keep the faith.

I'm going to be different than everyone else that's posted and say unless you're a Norwood 3.5+ don't get a hair transplant.

How do you know how much more you'll bald? It's possible that you'll go to a NW7, or it's possible that your genetics will stop balding tomorrow. If the Norwood 7 route is in store, you'll use up thousands of doner hairs now, only to be screwed later down the road.

You also posted a few things you tried. Have you tried finasteride or dutasteride combined with Nizoral & minoxidil? Most of the products you posted are crap and don't work (minus the regain).

Harie, if anything i figure if I do one now, by the time ill need another one (if I do at all) they will be able to clone, hopefully. What do you mean ill be screwed later though? p.s what is finasteride/dutasteride? Thanks

So you go in tomorrow and get 3000 grafts to your hairline, to obtain the hairline of most 22 year olds. What if they don't perfect cloning by the time you need another transplant? Then you've packed in 3000 grafts into the front/temples etc and only have maybe another 4000 left to do the rest of your head. Basically you're screwed.

Like I said before, if you're not a Norwood 3.5+, wait on a hair transplant. Any ethical doctor won't give you a hair transplant at your age anyway, unless you're very far down the Norwood scale.

dutasteride = Dutasteride
finasteride - Finasteride, Propecia, Proscar etc.

What Norwood are you? Only frontal? Diffuse etc?

I agree. Go ONLY to Dr. Shapiro MN. . He will set you straight and send you away with the reasons why. Almost anyone else will put you in the chair and get you started or worse..

thanks for the help....So looking at the scale im around if not at a NW3. maybe not as much is lost in the frontal part but the back is a NW3 and the front is between a 2-3. but if you guys say that most docs wont do the surgery because the age then im going to have to try something else. how long should I wait??? Is it safe to buy Propecia from safeusmeds.com or should i be getting it from somewhere else? once again thanks for all the help.

You should find a good dermatologist that knows about hair. Ask if propecia is right for you and about any side effects it might have. Also there is Nizoral shampoo. Remember a transplant can leave you with much less hair than if you had done nothing. They also require several procedures, Its not a one shot deal.

fast95er I'm not saying you shouldn't get a transplant but hair transplant's are a LAST resort after the proven medical treatments.

You say you have used products like nixon, kevis etc which are well known scams, yet you have no idea what finasteride (propecia) or dutasteride are which are proven male pattern baldness treatments.

You need to try what are called the "big 3" on these forums - propecia, minoxidil and nizoral shampoo.

You can find a lot of info about these treatments on this site.

After you have used these treatments for a year you may decide you no longer need a hair transplant, but if you do still want a hair transplant you will at least be slowing down your future loss and hence reducing the need for future further hair transplant's.

All the best.

is it recommended that you see a dermatologist or should you go no matter what? When I was about 18 my doctor said to take rogain because my body was still growing otherwise he would have recommended propecia. So my question is do I have to go see a dermatologist or can i just start taking the "the Big 3"?

See a dermatologist. Make sure they are familiar with hairloss and treatments before you go. It will cost a few bucks but well worth it. Do NOT go to a transplant doctor to get advice. It will be how many grafts plus propecia. Its called the HOOK. You need a doctor to prescribe meds like propecia. There are also side effects to all drugs. By the way . Look at this. - http://www.baldrus.com/transplant.shtml
