Hair Loss, Discoloration, Flaky Skin...

Hello everyone, I'm searching for some input in advance of my trip to the dermatologist, to arm myself with some knowledge. The last one I went to simply prescribed me an "energizing shampoo" off of a checklist provided by the shampoo manufacturer. o_O

I've very gradually had a receding hairline above each of my temples, over the course of a few years now, but lately it's accelerated, a lot. It's still mostly in this same area, but it seems to be happening to a lesser extent all over my scalp. The most notable thing is a lot of the strands are becoming discolored beforehand - not turning gray or white, like from old age, but more of a shiny silver/blond. It's possible they're thinner, and seem to break easier. My facial skin, especially on my forehead, is also redder than normal, and more flaky. My hair also tends to get pretty oily, too.

I just did the full battery of thyroid tests, just to cover my bases ahead of my trip to the dermatologist. I've read certain deficiencies can cause hair loss and discoloration, and am also considering the possibility of a fungus or bacterial infection. Or is this just a genetic loss of hair (can't think of any relatives who have had problems with baldness, though, not that that might necessarily matter).

Anyways, I'll attach a few pictures. I've always grown my hair out long, and it's fast approaching the point where I'll have to shave it all off... ugh.

Does any of this ring any diagnostic bells? Thanks for any input or advise! :)

Hello, welcome to the forum. If I were you I'd start using finasteride. You can find more info about it here:

Edit: After stabilising your hairloss with finasteride, I'd read up on minoxidil if you haven't experienced any regrowth/not lazy enough to use it.

If you suffer from an itchy scalp you could give Nizoral a try aswell, it has worked great for me.

Hi, thanks for pointing me in this direction, I'll read up on these and take notes for my appointment. It is indeed itchy along the hairline at times.

This would be male pattern baldness, then, it seems? And the hair discoloration would be a normal symptom of that?

Thanks again!

Hello again. The reason as to why your hair is a different colour would be due to the miniaturization. In my opinion this looks like standard androgenetic alopecia. What's your age? If you are above 20 I'd recommend treatments ASAP.
