Hair loss Crown Question

Hey Everyone,
This might have been covered before & may actually be a non-intelligent question for those who had or have crown loss, is there a place that it generally starts on the crown (on the left or right side) or does it depend on the person w/genetics?

Mine, I suspect, is happening by my whorl (swirl) area & possibly extending up on the upper side on the left-side. Correct me if I'm wrong but in the whorl area (the whorl itself & the surrounding area), it is common to see scalp & the hair isn't as thick there as in other places?

Sorry if this is a stupid question but just trying to weight my options if I should start finasteride or rogaine to maybe curb this.

Thanks.

Mine has started in the growth spot (whirl) too. When I first got concerned the person who cut my hair told me it was only a growth spot so I had nothing to worry about but I really felt like it was different than before. Now it has thinned in that spot considerably and now the top of my scalp above the growth spot is thinning a bit,

but it is mostly up to genetics. For some guys the hairline recedes until it reaches the crown, some have both the crown and the hairline recede at the same time, and others like me just have a bit diffusing at the crown with steady advances to the hairline over the years. I guess out of all of them I prefer mine the best, it's easier to hide anyway.

Check out this chart guys.

Chart

If it's diffusion at the crown, you might want to have yourselves checked for iron difficiency. (No. I'm not a doctor :) )

Thanks freakout. I cannot see the chart but I'll take your word for it. Actually my dermatologist said that too about iron so I definitely think there is truth with it.

Thom, yeah my whorl area looks it might be doing that also & wondering how far that this could develop. It honestly looks like it isn't going miniature but again, I don't think I cold really tell or is there actually? I think honestly I have a cowlick going on there too because that area of my hair kind of "rises" up compared to the other side. Thanks for the comments guys! Thom, did you get on propecia or rogaine for this? Currently not taking anything for hair but my derm said that I should take 3000mcgs of biotin and yes, iron.

How much iron did your derm recommend you take a day,and I know women need it more than men but what is a safe dose for a man to take a day if needed.

sc64, I thought I wrote it down but I cannot find it. I am taking a multi-vitamin that has 1mcg of iron along with 900mcgs of Biotin but I also take a protein shake Spiru-tein (anyone heard of that) that has biotin also. Another problem that could be leading to this is my build. I am 6'1 and weight 124lbs so I don't know if this can relate to hair issues. Sorry sc64 that I don't has a specific answer. She also said that my recession in my front looks like all that I will have and won't recede further but I don't know if a derm can really boldly say this.

I'm interested in seeing this chart. Any idea of where you found it originally?

Yeah I know what you mean about weight. I've been told at 36, that I possess a high metabolism rate & all my life, I have had difficulty of gaining. I'm not sure if this can relate to hair loss in the crown area or just in general or maybe I have male pattern baldness. I had my thyroid checked and they said it was Ok. I agree with cyber that I would like to see that chart also. Very interesting.

Well, I didn't start noticing the thinning until I was about 22 and I am 24 and it has gotten worse but not as worse as I feared. My hairline has matured but it just looks like a normal 24 year old male hairline. The only reason I know it matured is because I had a scar that used to be in my hair at the upper right temple and now it's on my forehead haha.

Just as of last November I also have been able to see my whole scalp when it is wet and this is what got me to take action. I started Rogaine on December 16 as well as vitamins such as biotin, zinc, iron, and saw palmetto. I am scheduled to see a dermatologist this Friday so hopefully I can get a prescription for propecia. I don't know if you read it but there was a story posted on here last week about a woman who lost all of her hair and grew it back with a high iron diet. I recall going to the doctor for a blood test last year and he said my only problem was my iron was a bit low. Didn't occur to me that it could contribute until I read that article!

Just curious, do you eat a lot of calories everyday? The only reason I ask is I made a huge mistake last year by eating from 500 to 800 calories a day while doing p90x. I lost the desired weight but then I read eating to few calories, especially while exerting that much energy, can make you lose hair. I started p90x again yesterday but I am taking in at least 1500 calories a day now.

Here's a picture of my crown taken recently so you can see how it has thinned but I think the supplements are helping.

Thom, I think your crown area looks good & I agree, it's always good to be proactive. Yeah I did actually see that about iron and I don't know if this connects, but I am constantly cold at times & sometimes my fingernails are purple so this might all link together. The back of my head, I need to get a photo on here, but I have a split on the top portion going to the back & the line kind of goes up to the whorl which you can visually see a bit. But my hair kind of goes up in the area (which I think is strange) and the other side lays flat. Does that make sense or heard of that before? Thanks for the comment.

Each person's condition is a unique case in terms of iron deficiency. But if you want the safe level, check for the recomended supplemental iron in the label of a multivitamin bottle.

Thanks man! I guess I get depressed about it and usually make it worse than it is but then again that is what motivates me to do more about the problem. I'm not sure about your fingernails but there definitely could be a correlation, at the very least it might be poor circulation?

I can sort of get a visual image of what your saying about your hair pattern but I would have to see a picture. Could definitely just be a different sort of cowlick or even a combination of the cowlick and poor iron which would mean it's not male pattern baldness. Or a little of each so I'm not sure. I definitely know where your coming from though in the confusion. I always hated my cowlick as a kid and now that it's a lot thinner I'm hoping it's more cowlick and less male pattern baldness.

Thom, sorry don't know how to transfer photos over but if you wanted to see what I have going on, it's here...People say that it's just a split in my hair on top but just don't know if that makes sense. Also if you can see in the first photo, in the back right, it looks like my hair is liking rising...dunno, utterly confused, lol.

Haha I see what you mean. I don't think that even remotely looks like thinning and I personally think you have nothing to worry about. However, people did tell me that exact same thing about 2 years ago because I have the cowlick and swirl but then it turned out it was thinning so I sort of wish I wouldn't have listened to them even if they were being nice. From my point of view you're completely fine but a dermatologist could tell you for sure and maybe put your mind at ease. I've got an appointment with one tomorrow.

Thanks man. Yeah it's got crazy insane stuff going on. But again, thanks & I hope that you have good results with your dermatologist tomorrow!

Thanks! I'm just hoping he at least tells me I have more time with my hair haha. I usually think my hair is alright until I get out of the shower and I can see my whole scalp. It's very disheartening!
