Is this a common course for hair loss to begin at? I'm 24 and have noticed a bit of thinning all of a sudden, but it seems to be especially severe right where my hair swirls at the rear-rightmost part of my head. The hairs are much shorter at this point and seem weak and scraggly. Male pattern baldness does not run in my family, let alone premature male pattern baldness. Could there be any other explanations for this localized hair miniaturization?

AFAIK, no. The only condition causing miniaturization of hair, is male pattern baldness.

It might not be miniaturization and just shorter hairs that your noticing. Not all hair in your head is the same length, all follicles have different growth cycles.
