Are all hairs that are thinner at the root the effects of male pattern baldness?

"Transitional phase. When the Anagen growth phase comes to an end, hair enters into a Catagen phase which lasts about one or two weeks. During this transitional phase, the hair follicle shrinks to about 1/6th of the normal diameter. The "root" is diminished and the dermal papilla breaks away and rests below the scalp."

It basically suggest that all hairs that are in catagen shrink for about two weeks?

So is male pattern baldness caused by the slow miniturization, or the shortened anagen phase? Suggesting it is normal for hairs to be thinner at the root but NOT to have excessive sheding.

Im confused :(
