Hey guys,
I've recently joined this forum and have a few questions about hair care in general. At the moment I don't know if I am losing my hair but I am starting to keep pics/diary to monitor it (will post when I can). I am also looking to set up a meeting with a derm and my GP (Doctor) to check it out. I am 24 years old. My hair has always been quite thin, but now recently that I have grown it out it seems the top is thinner and straighter than the sides/bottom. The sides/bottom grow out quite wavy/curly and are thicker. It is noticable in touch I think but not really visually as much. If I put gel in my hair it looks like it's 100% fine. My thoughts are that hair loss might be starting now, even if very slowly. Previous posts someone said that hair loss can take years to even notice, but that the evil work is done slowly and bit by bit.
I am worried because my head shape is NOT suited for shaving at all. I look terrible. I only look half decent with medium length hair. I am sure most of us here think the same. Nevertheless I count myself fortunate that I still have hair now. I want to keep it though... for as long as possible. I think a lot of people on this board don't realise that slowing down the process is an amazing thing in itself. When I looked in the mirror while young I thought "why do I have such thin hair, not the funky thick hair other kids have?!" but now I want to take a more positive approach in case I lose the thin stuff I have now.
What's the best way to do this?
1) Diet
should I be avoiding particular products? Anything that is seen as potentially good for the hair? I am now trying to have a really healthy diet in general anyway, and tips on that would be good. I was told by one person in a previous thread this would not make a difference but just checking.
2) Supplements
I am not talking about hair supplements, but other things people might take. Vitamins etc to take care of the hair and body.
3) Exercise
There are so many posts about this on this board. Now I am afraid my regimen at the gym might affect hair loss? Any advice on this would be appreciated.
4) Shampoo
I have used thickening shampoos since I was 16, are these harmful? What shampoos do you recommend? I saw advice about NIZORAL... can this be used as a precaution or is this dangerous?
5) General combing/gels/hair dryer/towel
I know gently pat my hair dry instead of the rough style I used to have. My hair feels softer and stronger... generally not as damaged. I would imagine this only helps the health of those with longer hair.
6) Maintaining
how do you know when to start taking Propecia for example? How do you know if you are mature hairline, slowly losing it, etc? I know I don't have aggressive loss at the moment, but should I be taking now? I have seen people with hair like mine who have kept it over long periods of time, others who have the same but lost it, others who had thicker and lost, etc? It's so confusing knowing when the heck to start. I am also worried that my GP does not know enough, as a friend of mine went to a Doctor and she told him "there is nothing to be done"... WHAT?! It seems as if hair loss treatments are not taken seriously by doctors. Through my advice he found this site and is on the big 3. I will add his pics too as he is not really an internet person (in 4-6 months when results might come in).
7) UK advice
I have been to Boots often and see "vitamins" or supplements made speficially for hair care. Are these any good or can they be taken from other vitamins? Do they help AT ALL, even if marginally? Right now I am not worried about money just about whether they are harmful or whether you might as well cos it helps even if small amounts. I think it's something like ManWell or something like that? Also Nourkin but I have read about that here too already.
Thanks everyone. This forum is great, although I do have to come in with a good frame of mind otherwise I get too paranoid about my hair!
