Growing out the top short on the sides?

My hair is thinning pretty consistantly all over the top of my head. So it's like I have a NW6 or NW7 pattern of balding yet I have a consistant ammount of hairs throughout that pattern.

It's just alot thicker on the sides and from the side view my hair doesn't look that bad it's just when you look at it from a birds eye view.

So my theory is what if I just grow out the top and keep the sides short and blend it as best I can?

Sort of like what Vin Diesel has done for his latest movie.
