Today I met my family doctor. He wrote me a precription for proscar 30 tablets ( 5mg) with 4 refills a year. Bought it in kroger for 85$. the insurance paid 45 and I paid 40.
Is anyone getting the same at a cheaper rate anywhere else?
thanks.

WOW!!! How did you get a script for proscar? How old are you? My Doctor told me he wasn't for sure if he could give me a script for proscar since I would have to be diagnosed with prostate enlargement and besides......I am only 28, no one would believe that I would suffer from BPH.  :freaked:

i have a prescription for 1mg propecia and pay $10.29 a month. my health insurance kicks in the rest, although i just refilled my prescription yesterday and for some odd reason, instead of getting the propecia bottle, they put 34 pills in a prescription bottle and it cost me $12.45. first time they ever did that. kinda weird

Thats cool!! What is your insurance provider? Mine is Blue Cross/ Blue Shield. I wonder if mine would cover it? My Doctor said it probably wouldn't, since it is considered more of a cosmetic. Proscar probably would , but it will be difficult to obtain a script, since it is meant for BPH, and would be hard for one to believe that a 28 year old would have BPH.

kallika, I am 29 years old. I told him that my dad has prostate problems (which is true). He wrote the prescription for me. He understands the agony of male pattern baldness at a young age. He said the sideeffects are very rare and there is no need to worry. I wish I had talked to him 3 years ago.

Okay, so when you go to pick up your proscar at the pharmacy, do they give you any crap or ask you why are you getting proscar at such a young age? If so, what do you tell them? How can your dad having prostate problems have anything to do with you getting a script? Just asking. Thought this info might be useful to me when I try to get my Doctor to give me a script for proscar.

kalika, pharmacy won't ask anything if they see a prescription.
I don't know may be prostate problems are genetic.

Cool! So if my Doctor decides to give me a script for proscar then wallah........I'm in right? I asked him about proscar and he said that yes my insurance provider probably would cover it, but it would be hard for me to get a script for it. Then I told him that it would be cost effective to get proscar and just split the tabs into 1/4s 0r 5ths and take one section a day...........then he looked like he was thinking. He told me to get back with him, I was currently already on meds, for something else of course, he told me that it would be better to get off the meds I am on then we would talk. He stated that he would try to pull some strings and get my insurance to cover it. I hope everything works. :)

my Doctor gave me a script when I was 20 for proscar, the thing I had to due was try to wow him so to speak with my research. I asked him and at first he said no but he would ask around to see if any others had more knowledge then he did. He called me a day later and gave me the script. So your best best is to go in and let him know that you researched.

Okay cool!! I could probably find some things online that say this stuff about Proscar, ya know, like cutting the tabs. You know of any links to this info?

Um basically I got all my info here. I told him that finasteride was finasteride, just so happened that propecia was only 1mg, and let him know that I was totally aware of all of the possible side effects, i.e. shedding, weak erections, etc. I actually had to explain to him that it would take at least a year before really being able to evaluate my stance on it and that due to money issues I would like to take proscar and just cut the tablets. I told him from my research the tablets were uniformed throughout the whole pill and that no current research have stated that is was unsafe. I have been on finasteride for some time now so I forget exactly everything I told him. But most docs do not know a lot about this so in essence it is something where you can actually teach them, not being cocky of course just letting them know. It was ironic that my doctor whom orignally prescribed it for me, left the practice, recently and I had to go in for my yearly check up. I had a new Doctor with a full head of hair that chuckled but gave me my script. I asked him why he had laughed and he said because the Doctor that gave me the script at the start was bald but he had a good head of hair so he was not as sympathetic as my first bald Doctor.

kallika, be careful though. my doctor pretty much knows everything about male pattern baldness, finasteride, proscar, hair cycyles, DHT, weak erections, side effects, etc. He even talked about dutasteride and asked me to keep out of it.

You could probably do that. Not sure if he/she will know. Probably though. :)
